February 16, 2010 by Matthew Roy

In front of a standing-room only crowd at McVann-O’Keefe Rink on Monday, Peabody’s superstar trio of Andrew Bucci, Matt Rodgers and Derrik Pereira put on a show.Facing archrival Bishop Fenwick on Senior Day and with the Carlin Cup on the line, the ‘3 Amigos’ were practically unstoppable. Bucci had a hat trick and an assist while Rodgers added two goals and two assists and Pereira added two assists to pace the Tanners (15-2-2) to a 7-1 win that wasn’t as lopsided as the score might indicate.”Our first line has had a great year,” Peabody coach Mark Leonard said. “They’ve been tremendous and they were again (Monday).”Bucci now has a North Shore-leading 53 points, two ahead of Rodgers in second. Pereira’s 40 points also place him high atop the standings as the trio has combined for 61 goals and 83 assists in 19 games.Peabody grabbed a 1-0 lead after one thanks to a shorthanded goal from Bucci at 9:48. The lead increased to 2-0 early in the second on another Bucci tally before Rodgers scored midway through the middle period to make it 3-0.Fenwick (10-10) fought back and cut the lead to 3-1 early in the third on Drew Thibodeau’s goal. But Bucci completed his hat trick with 4:33 to go to make it 4-1 and open the floodgates.Connor Purcell, Rodgers and Matt MacIsaac followed with goals in short order to turn the game into a blowout.”Give Fenwick a ton of credit. They’re league champs for a reason and played very tough,” Leonard said.St. John’s (S) 2, St. John’s (D) 1At the Hart Center in Worcester, Colin Blackwell tied the game early in the third period for the Eagles (9-9-1), assisted by Sam Kurker, but the Pioneers netted the game-winner on the power play with a little over three minutes remaining. In other action, Gloucester rolled to a 9-1 win over Dennis-Yarmouth at Talbot Rink and Danvers fell to Concord-Carlisle, 5-1.GIRLS HOCKEYSt. Mary’s 3, Acton-Boxboro 0At Valley Sports Arena in West Concord, the Spartans (20-0-1) returned to form after struggling the past few games as Courtney Winters had a pair of goals and an assist to pace the attack.”We came out with a lot of intensity, something that was lacking the other night,” St. Mary’s coach Frank Pagliuca said. After a scoreless first, Sabrina Iannetti put St. Mary’s in front early in the second when she scored, assisted by Winters. It stayed 1-0 until early in the third when Winters notched an unassisted power play goal to increase the lead to 2-0 before the senior closed the scoring with an empty-net tally with 51 seconds remaining.”This was a better team effort than (Friday, when the Spartans tied Fontbonne),” Pagliuca said. “Our depth was the difference.”Lynn/Winthrop 7, Shawsheen 0At Larsen Arena in Winthrop, the Bulldogs (8-2-6) kept on the winning track as Chelsey Bartlett, Rachel Mailhot and Taylor Brown each had a pair of goals and an assist.Lynn led 2-0 after the first and then exploded for four second-period goals to pull away. Amanda Cordes and Mackenzie Clark each added a goal and an assist for the Bulldogs.Chelmsford 2, Beverly 1At Chelmsford Forum, Clare Leathersich scored in the closing minutes of the third period to make sure that the Panthers (12-2-4) didn’t get shut out. Katie Szela picked up the assist. Brianna Jackson made 24 saves.
