Basketball: Tech falls to Cambridge

The Tech boys basketball team fell to Cambridge 56-49 at home Tuesday.”It was a good defensive battle,” Tech coach Marvin Avery said.B-Jay Baptiste led Tech (13-7, 12-2) with 11 points. The Tigers are now preparing for the State Vocational tourney game against Southeastern Tuesday (6) at home.Cathedral 54, St. Mary’s 45At St. Mary’s, the Spartans watched a 12-point lead at the half slip away late as they were outscored by Cathedral 42-21 in the second half. Ronsanto Campbell led the Spartans (11-9), recording a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Seniors Pat Calman and Alex Glover had strong performances on senior night.Swampscott 45, M’head 44At Swampscott, the Big Blue’s Zach Beerman was fouled with 4.8 seconds left and netted both free throws to keep his team on top. Leading Swampscott (3-16) was Peter Yasi with 14 points. Brian Sullivan had a strong performance with 12 points. For Marblehead, Tommy Stockwell had 12 points. Matt Temme chipped in with 10 points.Winthrop 73, Saugus 54At Saugus, Jake Connors led the Vikings, with a game high 23 points. Dino Mallios chipped in with 18. For the Sachems, Omar Benabicha led the way with 16 points. It was senior night for Saugus, and seniors Brian Boyajian, Joe Lowe, Nick Scenna, Peter DiStefano, Andrew Atton and Dennis Leng all had solid performances. Winthrop ended the season at 19-3.Gloucester 90, Danvers 67At Gloucester, it was a tie game at the half (34-34). The Fishermen (9-12) outscored the Falcons in the second half 56-33. Leading Gloucester was Adam Philpott, scoring 24 points.GIRLS BASKETBALLDanvers 77, G’ster 46At Danvers, the first-ever NEC champion Falcons (14-5) were led by Kellie MacDonald with a game-high 27 points. Sarah Palazola chipped in with 20. For the Fishermen, Audrey Knowlton had a team high of 16.Swampscott 53, M’head 33At Swampscott, the Big Blue (11-9) had nine different players score. Leading the Big Blue was the duo of Ara Talkov and Nikki Laskaris. Talkov had 10 points and eight rebounds; Laskaris had nine points and eight rebounds.Olivia Raisner led Marblehead with nine points.
