It is one thing to underachieve, disappoint and let down, it is another thing altogether to do all three with the suddenly complacent attitude of the Boston Celtics. Sure, there have been injuries, chemistry issues and old age, all very legitimate reasons as to why the Celtics have stumbled to a 13-16 post Christmas record. The fact is that Celtics fans saw this coming; they knew that the Green could not stand alone at the top of the mountain much longer. Unfortunately for Celtics fans they could not have possibly anticipated the classless manner in which the Celtics would fall. The 2008 champion Celtics often rallied around “ubuntu”; it was their way of telling the rest of the NBA that the Celtics were a team, a unit of players who had come together as one to achieve a common goal. Although the players have remained mostly the same, it is clear that there is no longer one common goal for this basketball team. The fact remains that the Celtics are supremely talented and still have the components in place to make a late season run, but there is something disturbing, something very unlikable about this team that may ultimately prove to be its downfall. The Celtics lead the league in technical fouls and complain about seemingly everything – what happened to “ubuntu”?Following their inexcusable weekend loss to the historically dreadful New Jersey Nets, Celtics center Kendrick Perkins told the media that the Celtics are “bored” with the process.”I think guys are really anxious to get into the playoffs,” Perkins said. “You have veteran guys like Rasheed (Wallace), KG (Kevin Garnett); you can tell that this regular season really doesn’t excite them, seriously. Even with Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, we still have to go out here and compete. That’s not an excuse for losing, but you can just tell that guys really just want to get to crunch time and get to the playoffs.”Celtics captain Pierce summed up his team’s problems by saying, “It’s like you have the answers to the test and you still fail. It’s just like that. We know the answers.”Celtics fans are beginning to wonder if this team in fact does really know the answers to the questions that are still to come. After all there is a fine line between being bored and simply being not good enough. The Celtics once prided themselves on “team” and now it seems as if the only team we have left to root for is one that appears disinterested, lazy, and unfortunately unprepared for its test.
