LAWRENCE – It was a packed house at Lawrence High on Tuesday night, as the Central Catholic girls basketball team defeated Peabody in a Division 1 North tournament semifinal game in impressive fashion, 80-45.Raiders coach Susan Downer was elated with her team’s performance.”My team played its best game of the year today. They played great on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball against a good team in Peabody,” Downer said.Top-seeded Central Catholic got out to a fast start with an 11-0 lead in the first three minutes. Peabody started to settle in at the end of the first quarter, where the Tanners found themselves down 21-7. Slow starts have been a pattern as of late for Peabody, according to coach Jane Heil.”My team has had weak first quarters in the last three games with my team finding ways to dig out of them. Unfortunately, to spot Central Catholic 14 points is too much for any team to overcome,” Heil said.Peabody played a much more efficient second quarter, scoring at a more consistent rate, playing better defense, and committing less turnovers, yet the Tanners were down 37-22 at the half. Peabody opened the second half with a Brittany LeFave three pointer to cut the lead to 37-25. That was the closest the Tanners would get, as the Raiders answered the LeFave three with a 9-0 run. Boston College-bound Katie Zenevitch had a huge performance and was as advertised for the Raiders. She led the way with 35 points and 13 rebounds. Heil was impressed with Zenevitch’s performance.”Zenevitch is a great player; it is as simple as that. Everyone did their best to try to hold her down, she is just an unbelievable player,” Heil said.Melissa Miller was more than a sidekick yesterday, scoring 20 points. Gabie Polce had a strong game running the point, scoring 11 points with five assists, and committing zero turnovers. For Peabody, Janelle Rodriguez led the way with 14 points, six rebounds, and three steals. LeFave chipped in by shooting the ball extremely well, scoring 11 points. Despite the result, Heil was proud of her team.”If I had to rate my team’s season, it would be a 10. My team was 8-12 last season, and we finished off this season at 19-4. It was a great turnaround for my kids, and it was good to see Peabody basketball being relevant once again. I have a great bunch of girls that love to play the game together,” Heil said.Central Catholic continues its quest for a second straight state title on Friday at the TD Garden.
