LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Saugus’ Craig Serino ended his college hockey career in style Saturday at Herb Brooks Arena as his Norwich University Cadets captured their third Division 3 national championship with a 2-1 double-overtime win over St. Norbert.Serino, son of Malden Catholic hockey coach/athletic director Chris Serino, did not factor in the scoring in Saturday’s game ? but he got his name in the box score just the same – for a two-minute high sticking penalty in the first period. St. Norbert, however, did not score on the power play.For the year, Serino had six goals and 16 assists in 29 games. In a career that spanned 98 games, Serino had 20 goals and 34 assists for the Cadets.Norwich also won titles in 2000 and 2003. In an ironic twist of numbers, freshman forward Pier-Oliver Cotnoir’s game-winning goal, with 31 seconds left in the second overtime, came in the 100th minute of a game that capped off the Cadets’ 100th season of hockey.The goal was the Cadets’ 72nd shot on standout goalie B.J. O’Brien of St. Norbert’s. Thirty-five of those shots came in the two overtime periods.Norwich’s 72 shots were the most by a team in the NCAA championship.
