Early in any sports season, a team can learn about its character in a hurry. After winning Thursday’s tilt against Malden, 7-4, the Lynn boys lacrosse team learned it can win on the road, throw punches in a back and forth game, and do it without its full complement of starters.In the first half, Lynn found itself in a dogfight, trading goals with Malden. At halftime, Lynn trailed 3-2. Coming out for the second half, Lynn’s defense clamped down and the offense rattled off five goals to grab the win.Leading the scoring for Lynn was Demetrius Polk with three goals. Junior Josh Delgado, playing in his first varsity game, scored twice, while Paul Strakus and Jack Carter each scored once. Playing a very strong game at midfield was Neal Whitridge.Lynn (1-1) started this game without three of its normal starters as a result of injury.”I am very proud of my guys,” said Lynn coach Peter Pappagianopoulas. “We had lots of guys step up, and got big games out of them.”Swampscott 7, St. Mary’s 4At Swampscott, the Big Blue (1-2) jumped out early and never looked back. Doing the scoring for Swampscott was Tommy Ball, Christopher Mason, and Sean Lannon, all scoring two goals each. Colby Wollerscheid chipped in with one goal. Jimmy Bradley had seven saves in net.For St. Mary’s, the scoring was spread around with four different players getting in on the action. Nico Manganiello, Steve Poliskey, Brian Griffin, and Justin Thorne did the damage. Chris Delvecchio also had a strong game in net. St. Mary’s is now 0-1.Medford 12, Saugus 2At Stackpole Field, the Sachems had a tough time with visiting Medford. For Saugus (0-2) a bright spot was goalie Ryan Wildman-Shaw, who came up with 16 saves. Scoring twice for Saugus was Nick Taylor. Dan Sheehan also had an assist.St. John’s 9, Malden Catholic 5At Danvers, the Eagles won in a hard-fought conference game. For St. John’s, Bobby Gallahue and Jimmy O’Connell each scored three goals. O’Connell added an assist. St. John’s also relied on goalie Nick Triano, who made 10 saves, including five in a tight second period.The Eagles (3-0) had to come back from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 before securing a 6-2 halftime lead. After the Prep scored three third-period goals, the Lancers made a final comeback bid in the fourth with two goals.Hamilton-Wenham 12, Danvers 9At Hamilton, the Generals jumped out to a 6-1 halftime lead and survived Danvers’ second-half scoring barrage to walk away with a win. For the Falcons (1-2), Mike Crocchi, Jason Carucci, Colin Delaney, and Chris Kontos all scored twice.Ryan Fecteau, the Danvers goalie, had another huge game coming up with 23 saves.GIRLS LACROSSEMasco 16, Beverly 2At Topsfield, Carly Baker and Olivia Wilson recorded goals for the Panthers.
