The Bishop Fenwick softball team managed only five hits on Saturday against Wakefield but the Crusaders sure made the most of that handful.Meredith Ross hit one home run and Abby Curran added a second as her walk-off shot over the centerfield fence with two outs in the bottom of the eighth gave Fenwick a 4-2 win over Wakefield.”It was a very well played game,” Fenwick coach Paul Lyman said. “Their pitcher threw well and we played really good defense.”Curran’s heroics came after Fenwick (1-1) had thwarted a chance for the Warriors in the top of the inning thanks to a rally killing double play on an attempted safety squeeze.Wakefield scored first in the top of the second before Ross homered in the bottom half. The Warriors pushed ahead again in the fifth before Katherine Melanson tied the game by doubling and scoring on a passed ball in the sixth.Alyssa Begin picked up the win in relief of Taylor Ahearn, who worked into the eighth, allowing eight hits and one earned run.BASEBALLLynnfield 7, Winthrop 6At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (1-0) Mike Roberts hit a 2-run walk off homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete a stirring rally.Lynnfield trailed 6-4 entering the seventh before Chris Grassi doubled and scored on a Pete Franchi base hit. Roberts then dug in and ended things in style.St. Mary’s 13, Matignon 5At Cambridge, the Spartans (2-0) bats came alive in the late innings and got 3 1/3 innings of one-hit relief from Curtis White to get the win on the road.”It was back and forth early before Curtis came in and did a nice job,” St. Mary’s coach Derek Dana said.Justin Sharkey led the St. Mary’s offense, going 2-for-2 with two doubles, two RBI and two stolen bases. Alex Glover also was 2-for-2 with three RBI while Joe Kasper was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a 3-run homer in the sixth that blew the game open.White struck out five and walked none in relief of Jeremy Tranfaglia, who went the first 3 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run with six strikeouts.Fenwick 8, Rockport 3At Rockport, the Crusaders (1-1) got a complete game effort from Mike LaChance on the mound and big days at the plate from several people in the win over the Vikings.Brian Church was 2-for-3 with a 2-run homer while Dave Ruggiero was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Alex Morsey also scored twice.Chelmsford 7, Beverly 1At Cooney Park, the Panthers (1-1) ran into a tough Lions club who is picked to be among the favorites in the Merrimack Valley Conference this season.”Chelmsford is good,” Beverly coach Dave Wilbur said. “We hit the ball hard but they came up with every one of them.”
