School: Lynnfield girls tennis prevails in the twilight over Beverly

Lynnfield coach Craig Stone was standing in the near darkness on Monday wondering if his team was going to get its match against Beverly completed. With the match tied 2-2, the first singles match was the lone one remaining as dusk set in.”I was standing there wondering if this was going to be the first time we didn’t get a match finished in all my years of coaching,” Stone said.Fortunately for the Pioneers, Allison Bodek was on her game as the sun set, steamrolling to a 6-1 win in the third set to give Lynnfield the 3-2 win over the Panthers.The Pioneers’ other wins came via a sweep of the doubles. Alicia Leone-Eva Grava won 7-6 (5), 6-4 in first doubles while Courtney McQueen-Tori Copelas won 6-2, 6-2 in second doubles.Arl. Catholic 3, St. Mary’s 2At Arlington, the Spartans (3-1) had four matches go three sets, but in the end, the Cougars came away with a point in second doubles to tip the match in their favor.Megan Fitzgerald won for St. Mary’s at second singles, 6-1-4-6, 6-1 and Lauren Carifio outlasted her opponent in third singles, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2.Fenwick 5, Williams 0At Quincy, the Crusaders (3-1) didn’t drop a set in the win. Lizzy Trainor won 6-0, 6-0 at first singles; Caroline Trainor took a 6-0, 6-1 win in second singles and Meredith Maguire dropped only two games in her third singles win.Demi Velonis-Sophia Bruno breezed to a 6-2, 6-0 win in first doubles and Sarah James-Katrina Piedman won 6-1, 6-1 in second doubles.Swampscott 4, Gloucester 1At Gloucester, the Big Blue (1-0) got a big win on the road. Kara Gilberg won 6-0, 6-2 at second singles; Tatum Peterson won 6-4, 6-0 in third singles; Kate Hall-Rita Tsokanis took a 6-0, 6-3 first doubles win and Kelsey O’Brian-Shannon Toner won 6-0, 6-1 at second doubles.BOYS TENNISSt. Mary’s 3, Arl.
