Lacrosse: McDonough scores key goals in Swampscott girls victory

The Swampscott girls lacrosse team squared up against Gloucester, with Swampscott’s Mallory McDonough scoring the game-tying and winning goals in the final five minutes of the game, helping the Big Blue squeak by the Fishermen 12-11 on Tuesday.Gloucester opened the gate with a 3-0 lead. The Big Blue fought back and overtook the lead 7-5 at halftime. Gloucester had an 11-10 lead with five minutes left in the game. This is when McDonough stole the show. McDonough scored a goal to tie up the game with two minutes left, and one minute later scored the game-winning goal. McDonough finished up with four goals on the day. Elise Giangregorio had a strong performance as well with four goals. Katie Zarinsky had three goals. Gabby Wooten had a strong game in net with 11 saves. Swampscott is now 2-1.Marblehead 12, Peabody 6At Peabody, the Magicians (2-0) only led 6-5 at the half, but they managed to hold Peabody to only one second-half goal to put the game away. Kiley Fisher (4 goals); Katie Corbett and Maika Strogoff (2 goals each) and Tyler Strogoff, Courtney Maag, Meg Collins and Sarah Kalafa, one goal each, sparked the offense. Sara Noyes (12 saves) nailed down the win in net with help from defenders Michaela Adee, Meg Collins and Steph Castoldi.For Peabody, Casey Broughton led the way with three goals. Senior Brittany Costa had a strong game in net.Danvers 15, Salem 5At Salem, Lauren Schaejbe led the way for Salem with two goals. Audrey Wyke had a strong all around game on the offensive side of the ball. Holbrook Phalen had a strong game in net with 14 saves. Salem is now 0-2.BOYS LACROSSESt. John’s 12, Xaverian 2At St. John’s, the story of the game was the St. John’s defense. St. John’s had a 7-0 lead at halftime and never looked back. Xaverian did not get on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter. St. John’s spread the scoring around with seven different players getting in on the action: Garret Campbell (3 goals, 3 assists); Jimmy O’Connell (3 goals); Bobby Gallahue (2 goals); Matt Scalise (1 goal, 3 assists) and Colin Blackwell, James Fahey, and Jack Sharrion, one goal each. Nick Triano had a strong game in net with eight saves. St. John’s is now 4-0.Also in boys lacrosse action, Lynnfield defeated Wilmington, 6-3.
