The Swampscott High softball team survived an early-season battle Tuesday with a 3-2 win over Everett in 10 innings at Swampscott.Pitching was the story in this one, with Cortney Fletcher striking out eight in seven innings before giving way to Kirsten Vinal, who picked up the win in relief. Everett also had its big gun on the mound. Michelle Vullo, who went all 10 innings, striking out 10.”There were lots of goose eggs put up on the board,” Swampscott coach Frank Kowalski said. “The pitching for both teams was the story.”Fletcher had a two-run double in the first inning to give the Big Blue an early lead, but Everett tied things up with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Swampscott finally broke the stalemate in the bottom of the 10th on an Allie Stevens RBI single. Merry Ball had two hits for Swampscott, as did Victoria Wolfe and Fletcher. Swampscott is 2-0.Classical 16, Somerville 1At Somerville, freshman Olivia DeJoie made her debut at first base for the Rams a memorable one by going 3-for-3 with seven RBI and two runs scored.Classical (3-0) came out swinging, scoring five runs in the first inning and five in the second. Chelsey Bartlett (3-for-3, 2 runs scored), Mackenzie Coppinger (3-for-3, 4 runs scored, 2 RBI) and Jenny Garrity (3-for-4, 3 runs scored) supplied the bulk of the firepower. Garrity also picked up her second win of the season, allowing two hits, striking out two and walking four. The game was called after five innings.Fenwick 21, East Boston 0At Peabody, the Crusaders had the bats cranking. Shortstop Kim Shinnick of Lynn had a hit, three RBI and scored three runs. She also got the job done defensively with five assists and a putout. Catcher Gabby Trahant, also of Lynn, went 2-for-2 with an RBI and sophomore third baseman Katherine Melanson went 2-for-4, including a double and triple, with three RBI.Taylor Ahearn picked up the win for Fenwick (2-2). She allowed only one hit, fanned eight and didn’t walk a batter in five innings.Minuteman 15, Tech 0Minuteman 12, Tech 2At Lynn, the Tigers played decent defense despite being without their starting and backup catchers. Victoria Park stepped in and did an admirable job. Freshman Rallianny Diaz played well at third base and Octavia Harper looked good at first base. In the second game, Allison Fournier had a home run and a triple and Kristen Hensen had a hit and an RBI.Salem 5, Revere 0At Revere, the Witches (2-0) scored three runs in the third inning with Rachel Channen delivering a killer two-run double and Stephanie Garcia following up with a sacrifice fly. Salem added two runs in the fourth inning thanks to a Darcy Theriault RBI single. Theriault stole two bases and scored on a fielder’s choice by Lindsey Trammel.Sarah Chasse was fairly stingy on the mound, allowing only three hits, striking out nine and walking one.Danvers 15, Ipswich 3At Danvers, the Falcon bats were in midseason form. Gabby Vega (3-for-4, 5 RBI, 2 home runs, 3 runs scored) led the assault. Joanna Zecha (3-for-4, double, triple, 2 RBI, 3 runs scored) and Caitlyn Ward (2-for-4, homer, 4 RBI, 2 runs scored) also did some serious damage.Taylor-Marie Dullea picked up the win, allowing four hits, striking out three, walking three and hitting a batter in six innings. Danvers is 1-0.Beverly 4, North Andover 2At North Andover, the Panthers took a 2-0 lead early, only to have North Andover come back and tie things up. Beverly scored the winning run in the third and added a little insurance in the fourth.Sarah Pezzulo, who shared pitching duties with Kristen Lojko (now at Salem State) last year, went the distance. She allowed five hits, struck out eight and walked two. Ashley Chalifour (2-for-3, 2 runs scored) and Jenn Gallione (3-for-3, 2 RBI) got the job done at the plate. The Panthers (1-0) finished 16-8 last season, losing to Newton North in the North quarterfinals.
