File this one under “not pretty, but effective.”The St. Mary’s softball team defeated North Reading, 10-8, Wednesday at Breed’s Grace Rogato Field, but not without a few anxious moments. The Spartans trailed 3-0 in the first inning, rallied to cut the deficit to 3-2 and took the lead for good at 10-4 with a four-run fifth inning. North Reading wouldn’t go away, however, and managed to score four runs in the top of the sixth to make things interesting.St. Mary’s hit the ball well, with Maria Nazzaro going 3-for-4 with a run scored; Brittany Hanscom, 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Michelle Macchione, 2-for-3, two runs, two RBI. Both pitchers, starter Sam Kiley and relief pitcher Vanessa LaFauci, struggled a bit at times. They issued nine walks between them. Kiley went the first five innings, LaFauci came on in the sixth and Kiley pitched the seventh inning for the win.St. Mary’s is 3-0.Marblehead 3, Everett 1At Marblehead, the Magicians rebounded from a tough outing against Georgetown and are now 1-1. Sarah Hastings went the distance, allowing four hits, three walks and a run. Marblehead scored all three of its runs in the first inning. Silvi Cohen (2-for-3) drove in two and right fielder Steph Lyons (1-for-3), one. The Magicians were very solid defensively, led by shortstop Kathryn DiGiammarino, who had six assists and two putouts. Marblehead had seven hits. The Magicians play Winthrop today.Georgetown 8, Lynnfield 1At Lynnfield, senior Jackie Papagni had Lynnfield’s only hit of the day, breaking up Georgetown pitcher Sara Erlander’s no-hitter in the bottom of the seventh inning. Papagni came around to score on Melody Mancinelli’s groundout to second base. Erlander was last year’s Cape Ann League Player of the Year.Lynnfield had five runners reach base on walks and one on an error. Rachele Milordi (1-2) allowed 10 hits and struck out three in the loss.
