The English softball team got its season off on the right foot with a 3-2 win over Beverly Thursday at Innocenti Park.Tiffany Drown gave the Panthers fits all afternoon, allowing three hits, striking out 11 and walking two. The Bulldogs scored all their runs in the second inning with Drown driving in Taylor Newhall with a single to get things going. Cathia Hernandez drew a throw from the catcher to third base, took off and scored on the play for the second English run and Lindsey Walsh added a little insurance with an RBI single.”Tiffany came out very strong the first three innings,” English coach Alisa Fila said. “She kept them off balance.”The defensive play of the game came in the fourth inning when English centerfielder Val Fiaccaprile gunned down what would have been the tying run at the plate.Peabody 9, Classical 7At Classical, Peabody came out of the gate fast and by the third inning, led 4-0. Classical answered with a six-run bottom of the third to take a 6-4 lead. Peabody responded with a four-run fourth to retake the lead 8-6, and never looked back. Classical coach Chris Warren was very happy with his team’s performance.”My team played very well today in our first real test of the season. I was very impressed with how we answered Peabody’s fast start with that six-run third. Even though we came up short today, I am very optimistic with the kind of season my team can have,” Warren said.The Classical offense came from Fallon Gaudet (3-4, two runs scored) and Mackenzie Coppinger, (2-4, one run scored). Doing the damage for Peabody were Olivia Brothers (3-4, 2 runs scored); MaryKate Helas (2-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI) and Morgan Yeo (2-4, 2 doubles, 2 RBI). Classical is 3-1.Arlington Catholic 4, Fenwick 3At Arlington Catholic, Fenwick jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning, but a late charge from AC was the difference. Fenwick pitcher Alyssa Begin was in cruise control through the first six innings, giving up just five hits until the seventh. Fenwick led 3-2 in the seventh, but AC produced four hits and scored two runs off Begin. Begin had an excellent day on the hill despite the result (7 innings, 4 runs, 2 earned runs, 9 hits, 8 strikeouts). Begin also had one hit and one RBI. Abby Curran had a triple and two RBI. Fenwick is 2-3.Marblehead 8, Winthrop 1At Winthrop, Sarah Hastings picked up the win for the Magicians (2-1); she also had an RBI single, as did Sarah Daher, Alexa Gross and Maggie Herman. Steph Lyons brought in a run on a sacrifice fly.Danvers 9, Saugus 2At Saugus, Danvers (2-0) scored all of its runs in the first three innings and Saugus couldn’t climb out of the hole. Gabby Vega (4-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored); Joanna Zecha (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored); Janelle Saggese (3-run home run) and Alicia Dean (2-for-4, 2 RBI) supplied the bats for Danvers and Taylor-Marie Dullea (7 innings, 4 hits, 4 walks, 8 strikeouts) got the win.Saugus (2-1) scored both its runs in the fifth inning on a Gina Repucci 2-run triple.The win was coach Tara Petrocelli’s 100th with Danvers. She’s been coaching there for seven years.Mystic Valley 21, Tech 6At Malden, Shanel Bird played well defensively for the Tigers as did Octavia Harper, who had a triple and two RBI. Victoria Park had a two-run double. Tech is 0-3.Salem 9, Revere 5At Salem, the Witches led 6-5 in the fifth inning. Salem had taken a 5-1 lead, but Revere closed the gap in a hurry thanks to junior right fielder Cassandra Zullo’s three-run homer over the centerfield fence.Sarah Chasse (8 hits, 6 strikeouts, 2 walks) picked up the win with help at the plate from Sarah Mullarkey (4-for-4, 3 RBI); Rachel Channen (2-for-4, 2 doubles, RBI); Michelle Stanley (base-clearing triple in the second inning) and Julia Jennings (2-for-3, double, RBI). Brianna Lauletta (4 innings) took the loss with Sara Selevitch going the final two innings in relief.
