Tennis: Spartan experience key factor to defeating English

The St. Mary’s girls tennis team’s experience was the key factor against Lynn English, as the Spartans defeated the Bulldogs 5-0 at GE Field Thursday.Amanda Latorella and Cindy Garcia won 7-5, 6-3 over the Bulldogs’ sister duo of Kelly and Scarlet Santana in a competitive second doubles contest.”That was a close match,” Spartans (5-1) coach John Wynne said. “English played pretty well. They’re very young but they should have a solid year. They have a lot of potential. We’ve just got a little more experience this year.”Latorella got a win in her first varsity match.The other St. Mary’s winners were: Stacey Politis, first singles, 6-2, 6-0; Megan Fitzgerald, second singles, 6-1, 6-0; Lauren Carifio, third singles, 6-0, 6-1; and Kelsey Barrasso-Corina Pinto, first doubles, 6-0, 6-0.Peabody 5, Classical 0At Breed, the Rams got a solid effort from third singles player Amanda Pearson, a junior captain, in a 7-5, 6-1 loss to the Tanners’ Sarah Athis.”They played back and forth the entire game,” Rams (1-1, 0-1 NEC) coach Tom Clark said. “Their third singles player seemed pretty skilled. (Pearson) is getting better and better as the season goes by. She’s come a long way.”The Tanners’ other wins came from: Alaina Warren, first singles, 6-1, 6-1; Emily Athis, second singles, 6-1, 6-0; Sam Syska-Kayli Lohman, first doubles, 6-1, 6-1; and Kerianne O’Brien-Michelle McCarthy, second doubles, 6-2, 6-2.M’head 5, Winthrop 0At Winthrop, the Magicians’ (3-0) winners were: Julia Zaltsman, first singles, 6-0, 6-0; Morgan Sharrio, second singles, 6-1, 6-2; Hannah Solomon, third singles, 6-4, 6-1; and Kelsey Davis-Kira Clingen, first doubles, 6-0, 6-0. Winthrop defaulted at second doubles.Danvers 5, Saugus 0At Saugus, the Sachems had a strong team effort despite the result. The Sachems’ Meghan Callahan, Taryn Mediros, and Lisa Belyes all played well in singles. Saugus is now 0-2.Lynnfield 3, Pentucket 2At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (3-0) pulled out a close one with the deciding point coming from Allison Bodek at first singles (6-1, 6-1). Lynnfield also had wins from Tori Copelas, third singles, 6-3, 7-5, and Courtney McQueen-Molly McCarthy, second doubles, 6-4, 7-5.Arl. Catholic 4, Fenwick 1At Arlington, Caroline Trainor had the lone win for the Crusaders at second singles, 6-4, 6-4. Fenwick is 3-2.Revere 3, Salem 2At Salem, the Patriots’ (1-0) Elma Meskovic won at first singles, 6-1, 6-1; Victoria Maura won at second singles, 6-2, 6-0, and Jennifer Kingston-Donna Le won at first doubles, 6-4, 6-3.BOYS TENNISPeabody 5, Classical 0At Peabody, Classical’s tightest match was second doubles where Dennis Husidic and David Raymond came up short in a three set match (1-6, 6-2, 3-6). Peabody winners were Cody Famiglietti, first singles (6-0, 6-4); Mike Warren, second singles (6-0, 6-0); Vinny McMahan, third singles (6-2, 6-2); Nico Disalvo and Dimitri Kritikos, first doubles (6-2, 6-1). Classical is 0-1.Marblehead 5, Winthrop 0At Marblehead, leading the way for the Magicians were Justin Hyte, first singles (6-2, 6-1); Tyler Gelineau, second singles (6-4, 3-6, 6-3); Ian Hyte, third singles (6-1, 6-1). Ryan Dempsey-Dylan White won first doubles, (6-2, 6-1). Seamus McGuire-Jonah Katz won second doubles, (6-1, 2-6, 6-1). Marblehead is 4-0.Prep 5, Xaverian 0The Eagles’ (7-1, 7-0) winners were: John Corvie, first singles, 6-0, 7-5; Chris Toner, second singles, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2; Brad Noyes, third singles, 6-2, 6-0; Mark Corvie and Lynner Mike Beluch, first doubles, 6-4, 6-3; and Ian Wright-Will Hochbrun, second doubles, 6-4, 6-3.Pentucket 5, Lynnfield 0At Pentucket, Lynnfield’s tightest match was second doubles where Mike Arsnow and Andrew Fabiszewski fell short (2-6, 6-1, 7-6). Lynnfield is 1-2.
