School Roundup: St. John’s lacrosse earns victory over Hingham

The St. John’s Prep lacrosse team’s strong start to the season continued, as it edged out one of the state’s top teams in Hingham, 7-5.”We didn’t shoot particularly well today,” Eagles coach John Roy said. “We are really trying to improve on our accuracy. But our defense played very well. Hingham is far from a pushover.”Bobby Gallahue led the attack with three goals. Colin Blackwell, Garrett Campbell, Matt Scalise and Jimmy O’Connell each added a goal.Chris Coadhy and Chris Ryan led the stoic defensive attack that stood guard in front of Nick Triano. Triano turned away 13 shots.The Eagles bettered their record to 5-1.Malden Catholic 15, Peabody 1At Malden, Greg Shidler scored the Tanners’ (1-4) lone goal. J.P. Oullette had a strong game in net, turning away 14 shots in his three quarters of action.GIRLS LACROSSESt. Mary’s 9, Arlington Catholic 7At Lynn, Felicia Ruano scored four goals to help keep the Spartans perfect in the young season (4-0). Courtney Winters and Bridget Donovan each chipped in with a pair of goals. Stephanie Kehoe added a goal. Hilary Duffy made seven saves in the winning effort. Olivia Benzan-Daniel, Eva Hynes, Megan Spurling and Brenna Huffman all had strong defensive efforts.The game was moved to Manning Field because Arlington Catholic’s field could not be played on.Fenwick 17, Marian 5At Peabody, Becca Graves’ amazing start to the season continued for the Crusaders (4-1). She tallied five more goals. Lauren Moulton also had a very strong game, finishing with four goals. Anna Moulton, Grace Cellona and Hannah Hartmann each added a pair of goals apiece. Erin Griffin and Taylor Anderson each also had a goal. Casey Landry and Nicole Votta split time between the pipes.BASEBALLFenwick 11, Williams 4At Peabody, junior Mike LaChance helped out the Crusaders (2-2, 1-2 CCL) on the mound and at the plate. LaChance, who is from Peabody, got the win with 6.1 innings of 4-hit, 0-walk, 10-strikeout ball. He allowed one earned run to improve his personal record to 2-0 (0.49 ERA). He also drove in a team-high four runs, going 2-4 at the plate. Others who starred offensively for Fenwick were Mike Davis (3-4, 2 R, 3 RBI), Pat Barrett (1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Dave Ruggiero (3-4, 3 R).
