If ever there was a “must-win” game early in the season, then Monday’s game in West Roxbury was it for the St. John’s Prep baseball team.Sitting at 0-3 after losses to Peabody, Gloucester and Xaverian to start the season, the Eagles took the field knowing another loss could make life difficult through a quarter of the season. But thanks to a solid pitching performance from Nick Fabrizio and home runs from Anthony Capuano and Kevin Davis, the Prep grabbed a 3-1 win over the Knights.”We definitely needed a win badly,” Eagles coach Pat Yanchus said. “Nick pitched well and we didn’t make any errors. That certainly helped.”The game was scoreless through four innings before the Prep (1-3, 1-1 Catholic Conference) broke the deadlock on a solo shot from outfielder Capuano. Davis increased the lead to 3-0 in the sixth with a 2-run blast. The Knights got a run back in the sixth against Fabrizio, but he bore down and struck out the last four batters of the game to get the win. In all, Fabrizio struck out 11, walked only one and allowed five hits.Spellman 8, St. Mary’s 7At Brockton, things were going the Spartans’ (3-2, 2-2 Catholic Central League) way early as the visitors jumped out to a 7-1 lead through two and a half innings. But ill-timed errors and timely hits from the Cardinals got them all the way back to grab the win.”It was a combination of us not making plays and them getting some balls that found gaps,” St. Mary’s coach Derek Dana said. “You let a team hang around long enough and they’re going to want to compete with you. And that’s what happened to us.”Ryan Barrows was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Alex Glover had a pair of hits and scored twice. Justin Sharkey was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.Salem 12, Tech 5At Fraser Field, the Tigers (2-3) made some defensive mistakes and they proved costly against the Witches. Edgar Rosario, Mike Aybar, Elvis Aquino and Mikey Lara all had hits for Tech. The Witches (2-1) got a 3-for-4, three-RBI performance from Brett Bremen to lead the way. Dan Dobrosielski was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Jensey Troncoso had a pair of hits, scored twice and drove in a run.Lynnfield 15, Ham-Wen 1At South Hamilton, the bats were out in full force for the Pioneers (2-1) in this one as they pounded out 15 hits against the Generals.”This one was much-needed after playing pretty bad against Winthrop the other day,” Lynnfield coach John O’Brien said. “For us to come back and play like this was a big surprise.”Pete Franchi’s five RBI led the Lynnfield attack. Nick Roberts had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs while Chris Grassi reached and scored four times and drove home two runs.Dante Padovani had a pair of hits, two RBI and threw five innings of two-hit ball to get the win on the mound. Rick Beradino and Chris Klotzbier each had two hits and an RBI. Mike Peschione also drove home a run.Revere 4, Saugus 2At World Series Park in Saugus, Nick DiMare needed only 83 pitches to get the route-going win for the Patriots (1-1). DiMare threw 60 of the 83 pitches for strikes and added two hits and an RBI at the plate.Brian Robichaud and Jay Sasso also drove home runs for Revere, who led 2-0 and broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the fifth.
