Former Lynn Tech basketball star Tony Gallo will join fellow Lynner Ryan Woumn in the ranks of Division 1 basketball next season. On Monday, the 2007 graduate of Tech committed to play at Coppin State out of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. CSU went 8-22 this season under veteran head coach Ron ‘Fang’ Mitchell.Gallo was a star for the Tigers during his four years at Tech, helping lead the team to a Division 3 state championship during his time under coach Marvin Avery. After originally committing to UMass-Lowell, Gallo wound up 3,000 miles across the country at Cabrello Junior College in California. All the 6-0, 190-pound sophomore did was earn all-conference honors twice and score 1,057 points in 57 career games.Gallo will be coming to a program that has been a perennial postseason contender under Mitchell’s leadership.Six times in Mitchell’s 24 years at the helm Coppin has won 20 or more games. During the ’90s, the program won nine MEAC regular-season championships and Mitchell has won 371 career games in Baltimore.Coppin and Mitchell also have a piece of NCAA tournament history as they are one of only four No. 15 seeds to knock out a No. 2 seed in the first round of the tourney. In 1997, Coppin upset South Carolina, 78-65, and then came within a point of knocking off Texas to become the lowest seed to ever reach the Sweet 16.
