Softball: Rams get past a tough Marblehead team

The Classical High softball team came up with three runs in both the third and sixth innings and eventually pulled away from Marblehead with a 9-3 win over Marblehead, at Breed, on Friday.For the Rams (7-2), Chelsey Bartlett led the way offensively with three hits in three at bats and drove in three runs. Hannah Byrne also had a pair of hits, including a triple, and scored three runs.Mackenzie Coppinger had two hits, scored twice, and drove in three runs.Jenny Garrity threw a complete game and allowed seven hits and three walks. She struck out seven.For the Magicians, Kathryn DiGiammarino went 4-for-4 and scored all three of Marblehead’s runs.”We played well defensively, especially in the outfield,” Classical coach Chris Warren said. “Our outfielders did a good job of keeping the ball in front of them.”Peabody 5, Winthrop 4At Winthrop, the Tanners improved to 5-1 behind a strong performance on the mound from Nicole Wilson, who did not allow an earned run. She yielded six hits and walked one while striking out 11.Offensively, Olivia Brothers had two hits and two RBI, while Mary-Kate Heller had a pair of hits, including a double.Salem 5, Saugus 3At Saugus, offense was the story in the first three innings, and defense ruled the last four.Sarah Chasse went the on the mound distance for the Witches, and didn’t allow a run after the third inning.Offensively, Sarah Mullarkey went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI, while Darcy Theriault alsdo had two hits, drove in a run and stole two bases.Stephania Garcia drove in a pair of runs with a hit, while Julia Jennings had two hits, scored once and stole a base.Swampscott 7, Beverly 2At Swampscott, Cortney Fletcher went the route with allowing an earned run. She struck out 11.Beverly took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but the Big Blue (4-3) answered with two runs in the bottom of the third and then took the lead for good with two more runs in the fourth.Moe Bradley went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Kelly Birchmore had two hits and drove in a run. Fletcher also stroked a double.Fenwick 4, Marian 2At Peabody, Taylor Ahern pitched five solid innings and Alyssa Begin stroked a 2-run double in the fifth as the Crusaders improved to 4-6.Ahern went the first five innings and allowed just two hits while striking out three. Begin threw the last two innings.Fenwick scored a run in the third when Christine Smaltz walked and came around on a single by Alyssa Bornstein. In the fourth, Amanda McInnis singled and eventually scored on a groundout by Smaltz.Marian got both of its runs in the sixth inning.North Andover 3, Lynnfield 2At North Andover, the Pioneers (2-6) put forth their best performance of the season, but couldn’t capitalize when they had runners on second and third with two outs in both the seventh and eighth innings.Rachele Milordi pitched all eight innings and gave up eight hits and no walks. She struck out three.Abby Tobin had three hits including a triple and scored a run. Sarah Goldstein had two hits and an RBI, while Christina Moccia drove in a run with a double.Jackie Papagni at second base and Katie Rowe at shortstop played well defensively.Nashoba 15, Tech 0At Westford, the Tigers (0-7) had a tough day despite some good defense from pitcher Shanel Bird.Offensively, Tori Park, Stayca Contreras and Bird were the top contributors.
