Track: St. Mary’s DiMaiti has big day at freshman-sophomore meet

Andrew DiMaiti, an eighth-grader at St. Mary’s, earned the designation of Most Valuable Performer at the Catholic Central League Freshman/Sophomore Meet on Saturday.DiMaiti earned a pair of first-place finishes: 800 (2:14.1) and triple jump (35-4). He finished third in the 400 hurdles (64.7).”He is such a good athlete,” Spartans coach Heather Woods said. “He gave everything that he had.”The St. Mary’s boys team placed second overall in the meet. Ralph Bertrand also had a great day. He placed first in the 200 (2:35) and teamed up with Todd Collier, Somto Osonagaro and Sam Scranton for the only other first-place finish: 4×100 (48.0). He also finished fourth in the long jump (17-9).The Spartans had several other individuals with strong performances: Jameson Wadman finished second in the javelin (106-9) and fourth in the discus (78-7); Collier placed second in the long jump (19-2 1/4) and third in the 100 (12.1); Kevin Romulus placed fourth in the shot put (31-4) and fifth in the 100 (12.1); Mike Cronin placed second in the high jump (5-2); Guishyrd Samson placed fourth in the 100 (12.4); Scranton placed third in the 200 (24.5); Eddie Traniello placed fifth in the high jump (4-8); and Sean Maher, Steven Bourque, Chris Soundis and Xavier Gonzalez placed fifth in the 4×400 (4:48).St. Mary’s also fared well in the girls meet: placing fifth. Brianna Anderson had a very strong day; she placed first in the long jump (15-0), second in the 100 (13.0) and fourth in the 200 (28.6).Rachel Hanlon placed third in the 2-mile (16:20). Chandler Cappozzi finished fourth in the mile (6:22). Maggie Carey placed third in the 800 (2:40). Carol DiMaiti placed fifth in the 200 (28.7). Carey, Cappozzi, DiMaiti and Hanlon also teamed up to finish third in the 4×400 (4:57).Fenwick won the girls meet. The Crusaders had six first-place finishers: Faye Haley, javelin (90-1); and 400 (63.1); Marissa O’Brien, triple jump (33-7) and 800 (2:39); Carolyn Claveau, discus (68-1); and the 4×100 relay (57.5). O’Brien also placed fourth in the long jump (13-9); and Claveau placed third in the shot put (22-8).The Crusaders boys placed fifth. Anthony Consoles picked up the lone first place finish, discus (86-4). He also placed second in the shot put (35-2). Ian White placed fourth in the triple jump (33-2) and fifth in the 400 (61.0). Frank Gambini placed third in the 400 (60.).New England Catholic InvitationalFenwick also participated in the New England Catholic Invitational yesterday. Tina Moran picked up the only win on the day for the girls in the discus (106-8). She also placed second in the shot put (34-3). The Lady Crusaders had two other second place finishes: Andi Saville, discus (88-7); and Brittany Dolan, 100 hurdles (17.06). Marial Quezada placed fourth in the 400 (63.6); while Katie Wilkinson placed fifth in the discus (76-2) and the shot put (30-1).The boys team won the 4×400 relay. Bob Farrell, Andrew Young, Andrew Deschenes and Tom Banks combined to run 3:44. Banks ran a personal best in the 800 (2:02), which was good for fifth place. Young also placed fifth in the mile (4:43).NEC Frosh-Soph MeetIn the Northeastern Conference Freshman/Sophomore meet, Swampscott won both the girls and boys meet for the second year in a row.The Big Blue’s boys team had six first-place finishers: including double winner Jermaine Kelly, javelin (143-1) and 110 hurdles (15.9); Matt Nardiello, 400 hurdles (62.0); 4×100 (48.5); 4×400 (3:48.6); and 4×800 (9:16.2). The girls team placed first in two events: Nancy Do, long jump (15-7 1/4); and Melinda Wilson, discus (80-11).The other boys to place first were: Tizauni Boyles, English, high jump (5-6); Joe Manson, Danvers, shot put (42-1); Olisa Obiefuna, Saugus, long jump (21-5) and 200 (23.0); Tyree Williams, Marblehead, 100 (11.8); Ben Martinez, Peabody, triple jump (36-2 3/4); Kenny Pierce, Beverly, 400 (54.4); Noah Mondello, Gloucester, 2-mile (10:33.8); Jake Morris, Marblehead, discus (110-1); Matt Carpenter, Gloucester, 800 (2
