School: Pitching, offense lead St. Mary’s over Austin

Kurtis White worked six strong innings and Alex Glover went 4-for-4 to lead the St. Mary’s baseball team to an 8-2 win over Austin Prep at Fraser Field. The Spartans are one win away from qualifying for the state tournament.”The kids played very well,” St. Mary’s coach Derek Dana said. “We started fast and did very well.”White allowed no earned runs and scattered six hits despite not having his best control on the mound.”Kurtis wasn’t as sharp as he usually is, but he made the pitches that he needed to,” Dana said.Glover’s 4-for-4 day included a triple, an RBI and two runs scored. Justin Sharkey was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored while Angelo Codispoti had a triple, two RBI and scored twice.North Shore 11, Tech 2At Middleton, Francisco Santos had two hits and run scored in his first varsity start as the Tigers (4-7) were plagued by shaky defense all game.BOYS LACROSSELynnfield 7, Ipswich 6At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (9-3) clinched a fourth straight state tournament berth as Jon Leydon had a hat trick and an assist to pace the offense. John Tremblay scored twice, while A.J. Roberto and Tim Lamusta also had goals.Doug Ullian was outstanding in goal, stopping 18 Tiger shots to get the win.Minuteman 14, Tech 7At Manning Field, the Tigers (0-7) played what coach Jay Richards called their “best all-around game of the season” as Jake O’Neil had five goals and an assist for Tech. Thomas Constantine and Kyle Gagnon also had goals while Scott Crooker made 17 saves in net.BOYS TENNISRevere 3, Saugus 2At Saugus, the Patriots (3-6) used a sweep of the singles matches to outlast the Sachems. Richard Bonilla won 6-3, 6-0 at first singles; Francesco Tartaglia took a 6-4, 6-1 win in second singles and Malak Mossadek was a 6-0, 6-3 winner in third singles.Winthrop 5, Classical 0At Lynn, Classical (1-7) freshman Seng Ly fought for deuces in 10 consecutive games, but lost his match 6-1, 6-1.GIRLS TENNISFenwick 5, Pope John 0At Charlestown, Lizzy Trainor won an absolute battle against Peabody-native Allison Connors in first singles: 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). Meredith Maguire was brought to a third set, but won 3-6, 6-0, 7-5. The Crusaders (8-3), who clinched a tournament birth with the win, won all of the other matches in straight sets: second singles, Caroline Trainor 6-0, 6-1; first doubles, Liz Sears-Demi Velonis 6-3, 6-1; and second doubles: Sarah James-Sarah Green 6-0, 6-2.St. Mary’s 5, Williams 0At Lynn, the Spartans (9-4) clinched a tournament berth with the wins from, Lauren Carifio, first singles, 6-4, 6-2; Megan Fitzgerald, second singles, 6-0, 6-1; Carina Pinto, third singles, 6-2, 6-0; Nicole Ferrari-Cindy Garcia, first doubles, 6-1, 6-2; and Brittany Lane-Emily Hatchouel, second doubles, 6-1, 6-1. Classical 5, Winthrop 0At Winthrop, Amy O’Brien won at second singles 6-0, 6-0, thanks in part to her strong serves. The Rams (6-3) won all of the matches in straight sets: first singles, Saska Icitovic 7-5, 6-2; third singles, Amanda Pearson 6-1, 6-1; and first doubles, Sheba Neak-Stella Aghanasopoulos 6-1, 6-0. The second doubles match was forfeited by the Vikings.BOYS TRACKSt. Mary’s 77, Matignon 43At Lynn, Andrew DiMaiti was a double winner for the Spartans (4-3), taking the 400 (65.6) and 800 (2:27). He also came in second in the triple jump (32-11). Todd Collier won the long jump (18-4); and was a member of both winning relay teams: Collier, Ralph Bertrand, Cam Scranton and Tim Ray combined to take first in the 4 x 100 (47.2); and he, Dominic Barcleau, Jack Simpson and Xavie Gonzalez won the 4 x 400 (4:20). Bertrand won the 200 (24.5) and took second in the long jump (18-3). Ray won the 100 (12.1); Ian Grocki, the javelin (108-0) and Jameson Wadman, the discus (80-4).GIRLS TRACKSt. Mary’s 69, Matignon 52At Lynn, the Spartans (4-3) had three double winners: Brianna Anderson 100 (13.3) and long jump (15-0); Bria Prophete, 100 hurdles (22.5) and high jump (4-0); and Keri Whitcomb, javelin (67-6) and 400 hurdles (1:30).
