Tennis: Classical girls earn impressive win

The Classical girls tennis team defeated Somerville 5-0 at Somerville Tuesday.The Rams (7-4) had quality play across the board. Saska Icitovic led the way in first singles (6-1, 6-3). Amy O’Brien played strong at second singles (6-1, 6-1). Amanda Pearson cruised in third singles (6-0, 6-0). Sheba Neak and Scella Athanasopoulos were impressive in first doubles (6-4, 6-2). Tara Gunderman and Nanouma Joachin rounded up the sweep in second doubles (6-0, 6-1).Marblehead 5, Salem 0At Salem State, the Magicians’ (9-2) winners were: Julia Zaltsman, first singles (6-0, 6-1); Megan Stanojev, second singles (6-1, 6-1); Lindsey Cohen, third singles (6-3, 6-0); Morgan Sharrio and Hannah Solomon, first doubles (6-1, 6-0); Kira Clingen and Lauren Angelo, second doubles (6-1, 6-0).St. Mary’s 5, Nazareth 0At Nazareth, winners for St. Mary’s (10-4) were: Stacey Politis, first singles (6-1, 6-3); Lauren Carifio, second singles (6-1, 6-0); Corina Pinto, third singles (6-1, 6-1); Amanda Latorella and Cindy Garcia, first doubles (2-6, 6-1, 7-5); Kat Troisi and Patty-Anne Doucette, second doubles (7-5, 6-3). It was the first ever varsity win for Troisi (freshman) and Doucette (junior).Austin Prep 4, Fenwick 1At Peabody, Caroline Trainor picked up Fenwick’s (8-5) only point with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 win at second singles, but two other matches could have gone either way. At third singles, Meredith Maguire lost 3-6, 6-7 (9-11) and at first doubles, Liz Sears-Demi Velonis lost a heartbreaker, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 4-6.Peabody 5, Cambridge 0At Peabody, the Tanners’ (8-2) winners were: Alaina Warren, first singles, 6-1, 6-2; Emily Athas, second singles, 6-2, 6-0; Sarah Athas, third singles, 6-1, 6-4; Kerrianne O’Brien-Kayli Lohman, first doubles, 6-0, 6-2, and Erica Reeves-Michelle McCarthy, second doubles, 6-0, 6-0.BOYS TENNISSaugus 5, English 0At Breed, Leo Barrios and Seryvith Mon put up a good fight at second doubles for the Bulldogs before losing, 4-6, 3-6. English is 0-7.Beverly 4, Swampscott 1At Beverly, the lone winner for Swampscott (6-5) was Josh Lunder and Sam Crinnis in second doubles (6-2, 6-0).St. Mary’s 4, Everett 1At GE Field, the Spartans (5-5) had strong efforts from unused resources. St. Mary’s winners were: Pete Louvaris, second singles (6-0, 6-2); Grant McKinnon, third singles (6-0, 6-0); Rob Goggin and Matt McDermott, first doubles (6-0, 6-0); Dennis Bertocchi and Pat Barceleau, second doubles (6-0, 6-0). This was Barceleau’s first ever varsity win.Malden Catholic 4, Lynnfield 1At MC, Lynnfield’s (3-7) lone win came from Mike Arsnow in third singles (6-4, 7-5). James Hook and Andrew Fayszewski lost a hard fought match in second doubles (2-6, 7-6, 3-6).
