Baseball: Great day for English

English’s baseball team got four runs in the first inning and never looked back, as it ran past Winthrop 8-3 to clinch a spot in the state tournament.”It’s always good to qualify,” Bulldogs coach Joe Caponigro said. “It was one of our goals at the beginning of the season. But we have a lot of baseball left to play.”Sam Hill went the distance on the mound. He struck out five and only allowed one earned run.Ben Bowden had a big day at the plate. He went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Brendan Carritte had a pair of hits, scored three runs and added an RBI. Roberto Reyes went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.Marblehead 11, Beverly 8 (8 innings)At Beverly, Evan Comeau hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to put the Magicians (9-4) on top in extra innings. Comeau went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Jake Kulevich went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Matt Temme (8 innings pitched, 6 hits, 8 strikeouts) took home the win. Felix Zamot hit a two-run homer for the Panthers (9-4).St. John’s 5, BC High 3At Dorchester, senior captain Nick Fabrizio bettered his personal record to 3-0 on the season. He went the distance, allowing five hits, while striking out three and walking two. Dylan Gonzalez went 2-for-4 and hit a homer that proved to be the deciding run. Tyler Coppola hit an RBI double.Peabody 6, Saugus 1At Peabody, Joe Gruntkosky hit a pair of home runs and knocked in three runs for the Tanners (10-3). Andrew Bucci went 2-for-4, and stole two of Peabody’s nine stolen bases on the day. Patrick Ruotolo pitched six innings, allowing six hits, while striking out eight to pick up the win.Arlington Catholic 8, Fenwick 6At Arlington, the Crusaders (11-5, 8-3 Catholic Central League) battled back from an 8-0 deficit. Pat Barrett went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Alex Morsey went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored.Danvers 12, Salem 4At Danvers, Connor Kelleher went five innings on the mound for the Falcons (9-4). He allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out two. Danvers got a pair of hits out of Kyle Larson, Nick Gikas, Alex Burgos and Ryan Shallow. Burgos had a pair of RBI.Gloucester 7, Classical 2At Lynn, Tyler Gauthier knocked in a run and scored a run for the Rams (4-8). Wilfredo Feliz knocked him in, and Kyle Gauthier scored the other run.
