Tennis: Classical boys sweep doubles, earn victory over Revere

Classical’s boys tennis team won a pair of battles in the doubles competition to propel itself to its second win of the season. The Rams defeated Revere 3-2.”The kids showed a lot of heart today,” Classical coach Chris Hayward said. “They easily could have given up after losing their first set. But they earned a nice win.”Peter Rondeau and Alex Messina took first doubles 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. David Raymond and Brian Renderos won second doubles 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.Larry Cheung’s strong play continued in first singles. He won 6-2, 6-1.”Larry has been great so far for us,” said Hayward. “He has been rock-steady.”The Patriots winners came in second singles (Malak Mossadek) and third singles (Francesco Tartaglia).St. Mary’s 3, Fenwick 2At Peabody, Grant McKinnon was taken to the limit, but prevailed in three sets in third singles competition: 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Spartans (7-5) won both doubles matches in straight sets: Kevin McCarthy and Matt McDermott, first doubles, 6-3, 6-2; and Rob Goggin and Patrick Barceleau, second doubles, 6-4, 7-5.Swampscott 4, Danvers 1At Danvers, it took Matt Gilberg three sets to win in third singles for the Big Blue (9-5, 9-3 Northeastern Conference). The three other Swampscott victories came in straight sets: Henry Willets, second singles, 6-4, 6-1; Josh Lunder and Sam Crimmins, first doubles, 6-4, 6-0; Jeremy Rosen and Ben Friedman, second singles, 6-4, 6-2.Peabody 3, Beverly 2At Peabody, Cody Famiglietti was taken to three sets in first singles, but won 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, to clinch it for the Tanners (9-4). Vinnie McMahan won in third singles, 6-3, 6-3. Ryan and Sean McGlone won in second doubles, 6-4, 7-5. Peabody clinched a spot in the tournament.Lynnfield 5, Amesbury 0At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (4-8) took all of the sets in straight sets: Rob Pisacreta, first singles, 6-1, 6-1; Carl Rugato, second singles, 6-1, 6-1; Mike Arsnow, third singles, 6-1, 6-1; Andy Durkee and Billy Kloza, first doubles, 6-0, 6-0; and Pat Burgess and Kevin Carr, second doubles, 6-2, 6-0.GIRLS TENNISFenwick 4, St. Mary’s 1At Lynn, the Crusaders (7-5) took round two from the Spartans (11-6) with Lizzy Trainor defeating Meghan Fitzgerald, 6-3, 7-5, at first singles; Caroline Trainor (14-0) defeating Stacey Politis at second singles, 6-3, 6-0; Meredith Maguire defeating Lauren Carifio, third singles, 6-1, 6-3, and Liz Sears-Demi Velonis defeating Kelsey Barrasso-Corina Pinto at first doubles, 6-2, 6-3. St. Mary’s picked up its point at second doubles with Nicole Ferrari-Cindy Garcia defeating Sarah Green-Sofia Bruno, 6-4, 6-1.Revere 3, Classical 2At Breed, the Patriots (5-6) had wins at second and third singles from Victoria Mauro (6-4, 6-4) and Yvonne Rincon (6-3, 6-4, respectively. Jennifer Kingston-Donna Le won at first doubles, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.Classical’s Saska Icitovic won at first singles, 6-2, 6-2, and Nanouma Joachin-Tara Gunderman at second doubles, 6-1, 6-0. The Rams are 7-7.Swampscott 5, Danvers 0At Swampscott, the Big Blue (12-0) ran the table with wins from Tatum Peterson, first singles, 6-1, 6-4; Kelsey O’Brien, second singles, 6-4, 6-2; Shannon Toner, third singles, 6-9, 6-1; Mara Gabe-Rita Tsokanis, first doubles, 6-0, 6-2; and Francesca Pelletier-Michelle Magbalovich, 6-0, 6-1.Marblehead 5, Saugus 0At Saugus, Julia Burke won at first singles, 6-1, 6-0; Mary Lindsay Ryan, second singles, 6-1, 6-1; Annie Ryan, third singles, 6-0, 6-0; Lindsey Cohen-Megan Stanojev, first doubles, 6-3, 6-0, and Morgan Sharrio-Meghan Gabel, second doubles, 6-0, 6-0.Beverly 4, Peabody 1At Beverly, Emily Athas won 6-3, 6-1, at second singles (her 13th win) for the Tanners’ lone point. Sarah Athas played well at third singles and Alaina Warren at first singles. The Tanners are 10-3.
