After flirting with a no-hitter a week or so ago and having to settle for a one-hitter, Bishop Fenwick pitcher Alyssa Begin apparently had no intention of having another “close but no cigar” outing the next time opportunity knocked on the door.The senior not only took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in Tuesday’s 6-0 win over East Boston, but she was also riding a perfect game until an East Boston hitter reached on an error on a bunt. Although perfection proved elusive, Begin came pretty darn close, pulling out the no-hitter in a dominating 19-strikeout performance.”She was in total control,” Fenwick coach Paul Lyman said. “Despite what her record (4-7) says, she’s been pitching great for us.”Begin was her own best friend, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Kim Shinnick of Lynn had a hit and an RBI, as did sophomore third baseman Katherine Melanson.The Crusaders are 7-8 with Austin Prep on tap for today, weather permitting. Fenwick needs to win three of its next five games to qualify for the tournament.Winthrop 5, Marblehead 4At Marblehead, the Magicians were threatening to tie the game in the sixth inning, with a runner on second and one out, but Alex Ferri battled out of it. Ferri went the distance for the Vikings (12-5), striking out five and allowing five hits. Abby Belcher knocked in a run and scored twice. Taylor Brown went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.Mystic Valley 17, Tech 2At Lynn, Stacya Contreras turned in a fine performance for the Tigers (1-13), playing well defensively and driving in one of the runs on a double. The Eagles added three runs in the fifth inning, which was more than enough for pitcher Nick Fabrizio, who put the MC bats to sleep (7 innings, 4 hits, 1 earned run, 8 strikeouts, 1 walk). Providing the offense for St. John’s (9-7) was Kevin Barry (2 hits, 4 RBI) and Kevin Davis (3 hits, one run scored).English 16, Somerville 1At Fraser Field, English scored five runs in the first inning and added seven in the second.
