School: St. Mary’s baseball puts shackles on Beverly

Very quietly, the St. Mary’s baseball team has put together a pretty stellar season. On Sunday night at Fraser Field, the Spartans put up one of their best games of the season against a talented Beverly team.Kurtis White and Matt Turmenne combined to shut down the explosive Panther offense while the Spartans scored once in each of the first four frames and made that margin stand up for a 4-0 win.”Any time you beat those guys, you have to do something right,” St. Mary’s coach Derek Dana said. “Beverly is certainly a quality team but I thought we looked very good out there (Sunday).”Alex Fiste drove home a pair of runs for the Spartans (13-4), who used heads-up baserunning to get the early lead.White took over from there, working through the first four innings before escaping a bases-loaded jam in the fifth.”Kurtis showed a lot of poise and looked really good out there,” Dana said.Peabody 3, Tewksbury 2At Bezemes Field in Peabody, the Tanners (13-5) ran their way to the win, literally. With the Tanners down a run in the bottom of the seventh, Jimmy Leavitt dashed home on a passed ball to tie the game and Genaro Ciulla scored the winning run on an overthrow.”We weren’t coming up with big hits so we had to find another way to win,” Peabody coach Mark Bettencourt said. The Redmen led 1-0 early before Bobby Losanno’s double in the third scored Ciulla to tie the game. Tewksbury pushed back in front in the fifth before Peabody’s swift finish.Nate Hubisz got the win, going the route with five strikeouts and one walk. Losanno added three stolen bases while Leavitt and Andrew Bucci were both 2-for-2.Fenwick 2, Swampscott 0At Peabody, Zach Brian was tremendous on the mound, holding the Big Blue to two hits while striking out seven and walking just one. Catcher Joe Bona was 2-for-3 in the win.Everett 5, Marblehead 4At Everett, Colton Dana and Dan Colbert each went 2-for-3 with a triple but it wasn’t enough for the Magicians to grab the win.Lynnfield 11, Ipswich 7At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (8-9) used a six-run fourth inning to break the game open on senior day. Mike Peschione drove home a pair of runs while Nick Roberts, Dante Padovani and Pete Franchi all had RBI in the fourth inning.Senior Chris Grassi added an RBI single in the sixth while Dylan Costa worked 3 2/3 innings of stellar relief to get the win.SOFTBALLDanvers 12, Winthrop 5 (8 innings)At Winthrop, the Falcons (12-4, 10-4 NEC South) saw a four-run lead disappear midway through the game before exploding for six runs in the eighth on a 3-run triple from Sam DiBella and a 3-run double by Logan Carabello.GIRLS LACROSSEPeabody 16, Beverly 10At Peabody, Nicole Napolitano had five goals as the Tanners (10-4-1) overcame a sluggish start to get the win.Beverly scored six times in the first five minutes but Peabody still led 8-7 by halftime. Brittany LaFave had a hat trick and an assist while Casey Broughton added two goals and three assists.Katie Teixeira had a goal and two assists and Amanda Nihan added a goal and an assist.
