Softball: English comes up short against Everett in extra innings

The English softball team lost to Everett, 3-2, in extra innings at Everett Tuesday.English struck first and took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. English added a run in the second to go up 2-0. Everett answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs to tie the game, 2-2. Both teams’ bats went silent until the bottom of the eighth. Everett scored the game-winning run with a bases-loaded single.”It was a really good softball game,” English coach Alisa Fila said. “The pitching pretty much dominated.”English pitcher Tiffany Drown had an excellent day on the hill (8 innings, 9 strikeouts, 4 walks, 3 hits, 3 runs, 1 earned). Samantha Earp had a big day at the plate (3-3, 2 runs scored). Taylor Newhall chipped in as well at the dish (1-2, double, 1 RBI). English is 6-10 and must win its final four games to qualify for a state tournament berth. The Bulldogs play Classical tonight at Breed (7).Winthrop 4, Mt. Alvernia 0At Winthrop, Viking senior co-captain Elaine Lanza was one walk away from perfection. Lanza took a perfect game to the fifth inning, where she gave up a two-out walk, which was her only blemish of the day. Lanza finished the game pitching seven innings of no-hit ball, striking out seven and walking one. The other senior co-captain, Abby Belcher, took care of the offense (3-3, 2 triples, 1 RBI, 2 runs scored). Taylor Brown chipped in with a good day at the plate (1-2, 1 single, 1 walk, 3 SB, 1 run scored). The Vikings improve to 13-7.Central Catholic 6, St. Mary’s 0At Breed Middle School, the Central Catholic pitching kept the Spartans’ bats at bay. St. Mary’s was only able to produce a total of two hits. Spartans pitcher Sam Kiley had a strong performance (7 innings, 8 hits, 6 runs, 5 earned, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts). St. Mary’s coach Colleen Newbury was very impressed with Central Catholic.”Central Catholic pitchers did a great job locating the ball on both sides of the plate. It is definitely the best pitching my team has faced all season,” Newbury said.St. Mary’s is 14-4.Northeast 16, Tech 1At Wakefield, Tech had a strong team performance despite the result. Tech’s Shanel Bird had a strong game on the hill. Octavia Harper patrolled third base very well. Alissa Fournier was the lone highlight for the Tech offense. Fournier had a double and one RBI. Tech finished the season at 1-17.
