McGuffie off and running

Classical’s Hulerie McGuffie qualified for next Saturday’s All-State track meet by finishing third in the 400-meters on Friday at the Div. 2 EMass meet at Cawley Stadium in Lowell.A sophomore who already holds four school records, McGuffie was third in a time of 58.4 seconds.She also qualified for a national meet in North Carolina on June 17-19 with her performance in the Northeastern Conference meet.Classical also finished 11th in the 4×100 relay, with Saffie Bangura, Tashanna Brown, Marina Fernandez and McGuffie. Brown (87-0) and Fernandez (85-0) also participated in the javelin but did not place.For the Classical boys team, Dammy Dada went 39-11 in the triple jump, but did not place.DIVISION 1 GIRLSPeabody had a solid performance, finishing with 14.5 points in the meet. Catarina Rocha was second in the mile (5:09) while Andrea Saccardo was third in the 400 hurdles (1:06.75) and Amanda Nielsen tied for fourth in the high jump (4-11). English’s Bianca Fowler tied for sixth in the high jump (4-11).DIVISION 1 BOYSSt. John’s continued its stellar season by taking a fourth place finish in the team competition with 43 points. Andover won the team title over New Bedford.The Eagles lone win came from Jared Kadich in the 400 (48.87, school record) but they had several other top finishes. George Sessoms was third in the 200 (22.57); Chris Crosby, sixth in 400 (50.59); Jarret Harrigan, sixth in 2-mile (9:41.75); Jack Durkin, fourth in high jump (6-1); Sean Enos third in discus (150-6) and fifth in shotput (49-5 1/2) and Scott Sheehan, fourth in javelin (160-4). The Eagles also finished second in the 4 x 400 relay.”I’ve been doing this 34 years and Jared is as devoted to track and field as anyone I’ve coached,” St. John’s coach Ray Carey said. “(Friday) was a breakout day for him.”English’s Melvin Tavares was fourth in the 200 and the Bulldogs finished fifth in the 4 x 100 relay. Peabody got a fourth in the 400 hurdles from Dave Richardson (58.19) and fifth in the 200 from Jamal Abu-Hiljeh (22.77).
