Roundup: Fenwick softball wins Corning Tournament

The Bishop Fenwick softball team won the Courtney Corning Tournament at Endicott College this past weekend.Fenwick ended a two-week slump by defeating Peabody 12-9 in the first round and then prevailing over Beverly in the championship 6-4.”We treated this tournament as if it was our state tournament,” Fenwick coach Paul Lyman said. “The girls got to go out on a real positive note.”Meredith Ross had a huge weekend, going 3-for-6 in the tournament, with a three-run home run and two runs scored against Peabody, and a run scored and two RBI against Beverly. Taylor Ahearn also hit a three-run homer and was the winning pitcher against the Panthers. Alyssa Begin was the winning pitcher against the Tanners.Lynn native Kim Shinnick flashed the leather in both games, making a sensational diving catch that she turned into an unassisted double play to end the game against Peabody. In the second game she also delivered at the plate. She scored a pair of runs and stole a pair of bases.Alyssa Bornstein had a strong offensive performance against Peabody. She went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and five stolen bases.The Tanners fell to Ipswich in the consolation game 5-4. Katie Brunelle went 3-for-5 in both games to lead their offensive attack.GIRLS LACROSSELowell 11, Peabody 10At Peabody on Saturday morning, the No. 16 Tanners bowed out against No. 17 Lowell in the preliminary round of the MIAA Division 1 North tournament. Peabody finished the season with a 10-6-1 record. Lowell improved to 9-9.BASEBALLSt. John’s 8, Danvers 1St. John’s 7, Everett 4Kevin Davis (5-7) knocked in nine runs over the weekend. He connected for a grand slam against the Falcons to break the game open in the fifth inning; at the time the lead was only 2-1. Nick Fabrizio pitched a gem, going the distance while only allowing two hits and one walk, while striking out eight.Pat Connaughton started the second game for the Eagles (12-8) but did not figure in the decision. Josh Spaulding picked up the win in relief. He struck out five, while only walking two.Kevin Barry also had a strong offensive showing against the Crimson Tide. He went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.Marblehead 10, Salem 5At Salem, Evan Comeau picked up the win on the mound, allowing four runs over five innings. He also picked up a pair of hits and scored three runs. The Magicians qualified for the tournament.BC High 8, Peabody 7 (11 innings)At Dorchester, Genaro Ciulla had an extraordinary day at the plate. He went 5-for-6 with three triples and scored three of the Tanners’ (16-6) seven runs. Bobby Losanno had three hits, while Ramses Vittini and Peter Sucharewicz both had a pair of hits. Nate Hubisz picked up the loss, despite throwing six solid innings in relief.Fenwick 5, Hamilton-Wenham 4At Danvers, Zach Brian only allowed two hits over five innings while striking out four for the Crusaders (16-6). Mike Davis picked up the win. He allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits while striking out two over two innings. Brian also had a strong day the plate. He was the only player with a pair of hits. Bryan Church hit a two-run homer.Triton 11, Fenwick 10At Peabody, despite picking up the loss for the Crusaders, Mike Lachance had a strong day on the mound, only allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits, while striking out three. Joe Bona went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Chad Lessard had a two-run, pinch-hit base hit.Belmont 11, Lynnfield 10At the Grant Tournament, Nick Roberts had a huge offensive day for the Pioneers (10-10). He went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Mike Pescione went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and three RBI. B.J. Neil scored a pair of runs and knocked in another one. Chris Grassi, Dante Padovani and Pete Franchi all had RBI singles.Chelmsford 6, Beverly 2At Chelmsford, the Panthers had a tough sixth inning, allowing five unearned runs. Ethan Trowt and Pat Wilson both had a pair of hits on the day.
