NAHANT – A building being constructed on the town wharf is expected to be complete by the end of July. The building, which would be shared by the wharfinger and Sailing Program, is the final piece of the wharf reconstruction project.Nahant Town Administrator Mark Cullinan said the project was put out to bid with two possible start dates and the town decided to go with the earlier of the two.”We had the option of building now or waiting until September,” he said. “The contractor showed he could erect a safety perimeter that would allow the wharf and floats to be used while construction is going on.”Cullinan said approximately six spaces in the parking lot would be lost during the construction phase but there would be little impact otherwise. He said the construction would not interfere with the operations of the town sailing program or the Dory Club.”People are pretty much going to be able to use the wharf as they have been using it,” he said. “We are going to have to enforce no swimming off the wharf while construction is going on. That’s not something we can turn a blind eye to for safety reasons.”The building is the icing on the cake for the $400,000 wharf reconstruction project, which got underway last year. The pier was rebuilt because a complete assessment conducted a few years ago determined it needed to be rebuilt due to degradation of the underlying supports.
