Roundup: Fabrizio pitches Prep past Acton-Boxborough

Nick Fabrizio put together a stellar performance on the mound for St. John’s Prep’s baseball team Sunday. The 12th-seeded Eagles upset fifth-ranked Acton-Boxborough 5-3 in nine innings.”(Fabrizio) pitched very well,” St. John’s coach Pat Yanchus said. “He held a very strong offensive team to only seven hits.”Fabrizio lasted eight innings and picked up the win. Pat Connaughton allowed an unearned run in the ninth, but managed to pick up the save.St. John’s (13-8) spread out the run production. Alex Markakis had the strongest day as he scored a run and hit an RBI double. Kevin Davis and Connaughton also both had RBI doubles. Tyler Coppola hit an RBI triple, while Anthony Capuano knocked in the last run on a single. The Prep stranded 13 runners.The Eagles will host No. 13 Westford in the next round today at 4 p.m.Greater Lowell 4, Lynnfield 1At Tyngsboro, Mike Pescione hit an infield single to knock in Dante Padovani, which gave the 11th-seeded Pioneers (10-11) a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Dylan Costa was the tough-luck loser. He pitched very well over the seven innings, striking out five.SOFTBALLWinthrop 4, Matignon 0At Cambridge, the 12th-seeded Vikings (15-8) got all four runs in the third inning. Abby Belcher went 2-for-4 with a single, triple, a run scored and an RBI. Elaine Lanza picked up an RBI on a suicide squeeze. Andrea Martucci capped off the scoring with an RBI double.Alex Ferri was absolutely dominant on the mound for Winthrop. She went the distance, allowing six hits and four walks, while striking out 10.The Vikings will do battle with fourth-seeded St. Mary’s this afternoon at Breed Middle School at 3:30.GIRLS TENNISWeston 5, St. Mary’s 0At Lynn, the eighth-seeded Spartans (11-8) were ousted in a Division 3 preliminary match. Seniors Stacey Politis (second singles) and Cindy Garcia and Nicole Ferrari (second doubles) had a strong performance in their high school varsity swan song.North Andover 5, Classical 0At North Andover, Saska Icitovic put up a strong battle in the first singles match for the 16th-ranked Rams (10-9). She lost 5-7, 3-6.Melrose 5, Danvers 0At Danvers, the 15th-seeded Falcons (10-9) had a pair of matches that came down to tiebreakers. Paige Clarizia (third singles) and Darcy Cherlin and Rebecca Leslie (first doubles) lost the first set 7-6.In other girls tennis action, seventh-seeded Peabody was upset by 10th-ranked Masco 4-1.BOYS TENNISManchester 4, Swampscott 1At Swampscott, playing on a sore ankle, Val Temin earned the seventh-seeded Big Blue’s (12-7) only point. He won in second singles 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3).In other boys tennis action, sixth-seeded Peabody was upset by No. 11 Acton-Boxborough 5-0. Ninth-seeded Winthrop fell to eighth-seeded Bedford 5-0.GIRLS LACROSSEWeston 15, Marblehead 6At Weston, Kylie Fischer netted a pair of goals for the No. 6 Magicians (15-7). Olivia Raisner, Katie Corbett, Clio Kammerer and Micailah Adee each added another goal. Sarah Noyes turned away nine shots.
