Little League softball: West Lynn American wins opener

LYNN – Ivy Martin threw a complete game 2-hitter to lead the West Lynn American softball all-stars to a 7-4 win over Marblehead, Friday, in an opening round game in the District 16 Little League tournament, at Lynn Woods.With some aggressive base-running, WLA took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and stayed on top the rest of the way, though Marblehead closed the gap to 5-4 before the Lynners scored two runs in the sixth.Offensively, Brandy Sequeria led West Lynn American with an RBI double. Jen Ierardi had a bunt single and scored a run, while Serena high also singled. Tayla Harkness played solid defense at first base with about a half-dozen putouts.”It was a well-played game with very few errors,” WLA manager Steve Martin said. “I give Marblehead a lot of credit. They kept clawing back.”For Marblehead, Rachel Ulian and Maeve Daley scored two runs apiece. Defensively, Marblehead’s battery of pitcher Kaylyn Countie and Hannah Fobert was solid, while Francesca Simon had an outfield assist.Both teams are back in action on Monday at 5:30 p.m. West Lynn American plays Saugus at Swampscott, while Marblehead plays Pine Hill at Pine Hill.Saugus 21, Pine Hill 17At Swampscott, Saugus scored eight runs in the top of the first but needed a 7-run rally later in the game to take the lead for good.For Pine Hill, Cassie D’Agostino had three hits, including a 2-run inside-the-park homer, and scored three runs. Kasey Harris reached base four times with three hits and a walk, and scored three runs, while Cassidy McGann had two hits, two runs and an RBI.Defensively, Dayna Barrett made two fine plays in left field.Saugus faces West Lynn American at Swampscott, while Pine Hill plays Marblehead at Pine Hill. Both games are on Monday at 5:30 p.m.Swampscott 36, East Lynn 0At Marblehead, East Lynn outfielder Stephanie Colclough made a couple of nice defensive plays while relief pitcher Tori Allen threw well. No details were available for Swampscott.Swampscott plays Wyoma on Monday (5:30 p.m.) at Lynn Woods, while East Lynn plays Salem on Monday (5:30 p.m.) at Marblehead.
