Connery comes up short in rally

The Connery American Legion team spotted Haverhill an eight-run lead in the third inning, but almost made it all the way back before losing, 10-8, Friday, at Breed.Connery scored three runs in the bottom half of the third. Ryan Beliveau and Brendan Mannion both singled, Beliveau scored on a Nick Roberts’ double, and Nick Day tripled, scoring Roberts and Mannion.Connery added a run in the fourth. Beliveau had a RBI single scoring Joe Kasper, who had singled, making the score 8-4. After Haverhill added one run in the fifth, Connery added three to cut the deficit to two. Roberts walked and scored on Day’s home run. Alex Fiste singled, advanced on a walk and scored on Jeremy Tranfaglia’s RBI single.Each team added one more run to account for the final score.Roberts was 1-3, with two runs and two RBI. Day had a triple, a homer, scored two runs, and drove in three. Fiste was 2-4 with two runs, Tranfaglia 2-2 with an RBI, and Kurtis White and Beliveau had 2 hits apiece. Connery is now 5-4.Swampscott 8, Saugus 2At Swampscott, three Swampscott pitchers limited Saugus to two runs as the Mariners won, 8-2.Mike Scanlon threw three shutout innings to start, while Nick Meninno allowed two runs over two innings. Tom Keenan finished up with three scoreless frames.Justin Fisher-Block and Robert Faia led the way offensively for the Mariners, who improved to 4-6.Swampscott plays at Peabody on Wednesday (7:30).
