NAHANT – A garden of art is set to bloom Sunday in Nahant.The Nahant Historical Society event, Nahant: A Garden of Art, is being held at the home of renowned artist Norman Laliberte.Event Chairman Julie Tarmy said the artwork and the idyllic setting would make for a memorable afternoon.”The artwork will be presented in various sizes, mediums and price ranges,” she said. “Add to that engaging music, lively conversation, fine food, fine wine and an inspiring location. Finish the thought with original works of art featuring Nahant’s natural beauty done by notable Boston and North Shore artists and you have an unforgettable experience by the sea.”Approximately 15 artists, including Laliberte, are expected to display Nahant seascapes. A portion of the proceeds of the art for sale is dedicated to the Nahant Historical Society oral history project.”One priceless piece of art will be offered at auction during the event,” she said. “It was created for this event and generously donated by internationally known artist Norman Laliberte.”Laliberte, who was born in Massachusetts and raised in Montreal, studied art at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts then continued his studies at the Institute of Design of Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. He studied etching and lithography at the Guilde Graphique in Montreal and the Atelier Mourlot in Paris. He has taught at the Kansas City Art Institute, St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame and the Rhode Island School of Design.He received international recognition for his work as the design consultant for the Vatican Pavilion at the 1964 World’s Fair. His work is displayed in the permanent collections of more than 100 museums and corporations as well as innumerable private collections. The National Film Board of Canada produced a documentary on Laliberte and his work.The Tell Us Your Story oral history project is in its 31st year. NHS Curator Calantha Sears has recorded more than 200 oral histories and the audiotapes have been copied into a digital format for safekeeping. NHS Clerk Suzanna Hamill has started the transcription process.NHS Assistant Curator Bonnie D’Orlando said the event is one of the largest fundraisers of the year for the society.The event will be held July 25, 2 to 5 p.m. at the Laliberte home at 51 Cliff St. Admission is $25 per person and advance reservations may be made by calling the Nahant Historical Society at 781-581-2727.
