July 26, 2010 by Matthew Roy

LYNN – It wasn’t even the Fourth of July, but the fireworks were certainly exploding in the Gannon Men’s Club Championship over the weekend as stunning upsets ruled the roost.By the time the dust had settled, it was No. 3 seed John Boland and No. 8 seed Ben Friedman who advanced to the 36-hole match play final next Saturday.Friedman needed 19 holes on Sunday to knock out No. 5 seed Brian Small while Boland eliminated Mike Cole in the other semifinal tilt. On Saturday, Friedman had upset No. 1 seed John Lynch Jr. to begin the series of shockers. In the net flight, the shockers continued as Matt DeBenedictis rallied back from two down with two holes to play and claimed the title with a 22-hole win over Peter Rondeau. In the women’s championship, Anne Fraser bested Jane Fiste in the main flight on Saturday. In the ‘A’ Flight, it was Gina Mantino defeating Helen Sidman while Nancy Gheringhelli won the ‘B’ flight over Nancy Patten.
