NAHANT – The Friends of the Nahant Library are gearing up for its next book sale. The proceeds from the Aug. 21-29 sale will be used to supplement library programs.Friends of the Nahant Library Treasurer Robin deStefano said the non-profit group was formed almost 20 years ago and it raises money, usually around $5,000 a year, solely through membership fees and book sales.”Eighty percent of what we raise goes to adult and children programming,” she said. “There is no line item in the budget for programming.”The library programming paid for by the Friends of the Nahant Library includes the summer reading programs and live performances for children.”The Friends also support other needs of the library not funded by budget appropriations such as refinishing furniture, special book purchases, newspaper and magazine subscriptions, copier upkeep and other building needs,” she said. “We finished the reception desk and are in the process of redoing the chairs in the reading room. Each chair costs approximately $700 each to refinish.”DeStefano said the group is looking for donations of books, CDs and DVDs. Materials may be dropped off at the library through Aug. 20. The Friends of the Nahant Library is a non-profit organization and donations are tax deductible.”We’re very grateful for the support we’ve received from people even during this downswing in the economy,” deStefano said.Donations can be sent to Friends of the Nahant Library c/o Robin deStefano, 7 James Ave., Nahant 01908.DeStefano said the Friends of the Nahant Library is also looking for new members. The annual membership fee is $10 for individuals and $17 for a family. Additional information is available at the library, by calling 781-596-1767 or sending an email to [email protected].
