MARBLEHEAD – Every time it snows the town should think of Boy Scout Troop 11.Troop 11 Scouts have succeeded in locating an estimated 300 town fire hydrants in the past three years so that they can be found and cleared off quickly, making them easily accessible in a winter emergency situation.The marking has become an annual Eagle Scout community project.The latest Scout to work on this project is Eamon Dawes.Over Memorial Day weekend 24 volunteers led by Dawes – scouts, parents and scout leaders – completed marking off 113 fire hydrants in the vicinity of the fire station on Pleasant Street and continuing toward the Marblehead Light Department offices.The project consists of marking light poles and identifying the distance to the nearest fire hydrant.Fire Chief Jason Gilliland accompanied Dawes when he obtained the selectmen’s permission to continue the project and also when he presented the board with a report on the completed work. Dawes thanked William Lanphear, Robert Jolly, Chief Gilliland and all the volunteers for their support.The chief thanked the members of Troop 11 for the assistance in the town’s fireworks display this year.Selectmen thanked Troop 11 for their efforts on behalf of the town.
