Delvalle faces charges of armed robbery and assault and battery on a person 60 years of age or older. The incident began at Walgreens at 1228 Broadway around 7 p.m., where two white men were said to have robbed the store with a knife and left carrying a cash register drawer. An employee of the store told police one of the suspects was waiting at the register with candy, when he pulled out a knife and demanded that he open the register. As the suspects ran from the store, they encountered off-duty Saugus Fire Captain Daniel O’Neill, who attempted to stop the duo and pushed one of the suspects up against a wall. The other suspect was said to have hit O’Neill in his chest, causing him to fall backward into the shopping carts. As O’Neill got up, he chased the suspects through the Walgreens parking lot, but they managed to hop into a Mitsubishi Lancer, with a third suspect waiting inside.Police were notified of the robbery and caught up with the suspects, who were said to have been speeding through Saugus and into Lynn at upwards of 60 mph. After a chase, police say they saw the vehicle lose control and smash into a home at 226 Walnut St., leaving behind a cloud of dust and rubble. Two of the suspects were said to have been trapped inside the vehicle, while a third attempted to flee, but collapsed to the ground because of injuries he sustained to his head.Police say $721 in cash and $17.50 in change were found in Ryan’s possession, along with a blue cellular phone. A folding knife was found partly underneath the driver’s seat.Ryan allegedly later told police “I’m so stupid, I don’t know why we did it” and “You know what, I’m going to go up to state for this one.”When an officer asked Ryan if they robbed the store to buy heroin, Ryan allegedly said, “I’m going to have to kick cold turkey in prison.”
