Mysterious bumper stickers eliciting snickers in Nahant

NAHANT – One campaign bumper sticker in town is turning a lot of heads and generating some laughter.?JenLainey McTitus for Selectwoman” has been appearing on cars throughout town, despite the fact that JenLainey McTitus is not a real person.Jennifer McCarthy and Lainey Titus are currently the only two candidates on the Oct. 19 special election ballot. Both candidates are running for a vacant seat on the Board of Selectmen created when Robert “Skip” Frary resigned in the spring.McCarthy laughed when asked about the bumper sticker.?I think it’s funny,” she said. “I think it’s cute. I have heard a lot of people say we’re both good candidates and they hope whoever loses the special election will run again in April (regular town election).”Titus also had a sense of humor about the sticker, which no one has stepped forward to take credit for.?The bumper stickers are a light-hearted and creative way to acknowledge that Nahant is a very small town where a lot of people have known my family and Jen’s for years,” Titus said. “With both of our strong roots in Nahant it’s going to be a close election. I have been working hard to meet as many voters as I can to tell them about my unique experience and hope that voters will check the box next to my name on Election Day.”Titus, who served as chief of staff to state Rep. Steve Walsh, D-Lynn, for seven years, served on the Nahant 150th anniversary committee and is a member of the Democratic Town Committee and Memorial Day Parade Committee.McCarthy, who is a public school teacher in Lynn, has served on numerous committees in town over the years. She has been on the Recreation Commission for 17 years and the Fireworks Committee for 10 years. She also serves on the Golf Committee and Fourth of July Race Committee. It’s not too late for additional candidates to get their name on the ballot. Town Clerk Peggy Barile said nomination papers are available in Town Hall and completed nomination papers are due by 5 p.m. on Aug. 31.
