Lynnfield Boys soccer looks to continue success of 2009

September 4, 2010 by Matthew Roy

Look around the area at all the boys soccer programs and you see the glamour of the St. John’s Prep’s of the world. But very quietly, coach Brent Munroe has put together a nice program at Lynnfield. The Pioneers enter the 2010 campaign off a 2009 season that saw them win the Cape Ann League/Small title and a game in the Division 3 North tournament before being stunningly upended by Rockport in round two. That loss has provided extra motivation for the Pioneers, who return most of their starting lineup from last year’s 13-6-2 squad.”I think that we will have a chance to be very good,” Munroe said. “We’ve had three or four scrimmages so far and we’ve played well in all of them. These kids are very motivated and they worked really hard in the offseason.”Lynnfield returns its top two scorers in Marco Addonizio and George Levintakos along with the bulk of a defense that was among the stingiest in the area last season. Heading the back line will be senior Mike Dillon and junior Pete Franchi. Steve Carangelo, a sophomore, will also be back to man the back line.”We are pretty deep in a lot of places except the back,” Munroe said. “But the guys we have back there are very good. If they don’t get hurt, we will be OK.”Goalkeeper Jerry Reed returns for another season along with halfbacks Steve Knox, Connor Dario and Pat DeRosa. Jake Atkinson, James Hoek and Jake Turner also are among those to look for this season.Lynnfield opens its season on Wednesday against Wilmington, a team that has lost one league game in two seasons in the CAL. Munroe also knows that the rest of the league is on the uptick as well.”Rockport is going to be good again. And I think this league, the CAL, has been steadily climbing lately,” Munroe said. “But this group is about as good a one as I’ve had here.”
