SAUGUS – Perhaps they should do this every 70 years.The Saugus football squad hosted its first night game since 1940 by belting Bishop Fenwick, 41-20 last night at Stackpole Field before a crowd of close to 3,000.Saugus41Bp. Fenwick20 Fleet-footed fullback Shamir Guillame ran through the Crusaders defense for 225 yards on eight carries – four of them very lengthy touchdowns.Fenwick took an early lead midway through the first quarter on a 14-play, 93-yard drive. But Saugus came roaring back.A Guillame highlight came on a third-and-2 on the Crusaders 37, when he took a pitch from quarterback David Witham, found a hole, and outran everyone to the house give Saugus a 14-8 edge with 44 seconds left in the quarter.”Shamir worked like crazy this offseason, and he overcame a lot,” said Sachems coach Mike Broderick. “We’re glad to have him.”Saugus took advantage of a missed opportunity by Fenwick, which missed converting a fourth-and-10 by inches. Guillame added his third score of the half on third-and-14 from the 36, outracing everyone to the end zone. That increased the lead to 21-8, which stood at the half.The Crusaders crept closer, when quarterback Bret Kidik (32-47-1-321) engineered the drive. He found receiver Ryan Lipka for 32 yards to spot the ball at Saugus’ 41, then teamed with receiver Jake Bugler for 11 to put the team at the 30. Tyler Thomann closed the eight-play drive by barging in from the five to get to within 21-14.But the Sachems responded. Back Stephen Almquist found the open field for a 72-yard score, increasing the lead to 28-14.Guillame added his final score of the contest on the Sachems next possession, running 73 yards from scrimmage. Teammate A.J. Guthro soon contributed Saugus’ final score, stepping in front of a Kidik pass at the Crusaders 40, and returning it untouched.Fenwick closed the scoring in the final period, hooking up with Bugler for a 51-yard score midway through the final period.Guillame put Saugus on top just minutes into the contest, closing out a five-play, 63-yard drive with a 36-yard scamper. Fenwick bounced back to take the lead, 8-7. On second-and-10 from the Sachems 40, Kidik found Bugler at the Saugus 10, and the receiver did the rest for the Crusaders’ initials points of the fall. Kidik teamed with Lipka for the two-point pass that gave Fenwick an 8-7 edge late in the opening quarter.”Brett (Kidik) did a great job, and the interception that he threw was my fault,” said Fenwick coach Dave Woods. “That opening (93-yard) drive showed Brett’s patience with our (new offensive) system. I thought our offensive line did a good job overall.”
