Boys Soccer: English stops Beverly

Matthew Roy

September 14, 2010 by Matthew Roy

Fearful of a letdown following his team’s win in the Lynn City Soccer Tournament last weekend, English coach Kerry King didn’t know what his Bulldogs would bring to the table on Monday at Manning Field.King needn’t have worried, though, because his team was not caught looking back at its successes. The Bulldogs (1-0-1) got two goals and an assist from Franck Wansi and a stellar effort from the defense to take a 3-1 win over Beverly.”I was a little afraid of us having a letdown but we really came out strong against a good Beverly team,” King said. “It was a solid win over a solid team.”The Bulldogs ran out to a 2-0 lead at halftime before Beverly’s Cam Rogers cut the lead in half early in the second half. The Panthers threw all sorts of pressure at the English net but Alex Zayas stopped eight shots to preserve the lead.Leo Awokang added a goal and an assist for English while Jefferson Fobellah had an assist. A.J. Xhemali, George Herrera and Chukuma Haluwah led the Bulldog defense.Spellman 3, St. Mary’s 2At Brockton, the Spartans (1-1-1, 0-1 Catholic Central League/Large) buzzed all game long but were unable to rally back from a 3-0 hole in the second half.”We dominated the game but it wasn’t until 3-0 that we woke up,” Spartans coach Mike D’Agostino said.Donald Hesse got St. Mary’s on the board in the second half off a Jeremy Tranfaglia throw-in. Ralph Bertrand scored on a rebound with six minutes left to shave the lead to a goal but the Spartans could get no closer.Saugus 5, Matignon 1At Saugus, the Sachems (1-0) opened with a solid win as Derek Codere had two goals and an assist to pace the offense. Chris Duplisea, Ryan Hartigan and Andre Itojuca also had goals for Saugus.Lynnfield 4, Ipswich 0At Ipswich, the Pioneers (1-0-1) dominated from the opening kick to the final whistle for their first win of the season. Connor Dario, Steve Carangelo, Marco Addonizio and Connor Sullivan each had a goal.Masco 2, St. John’s 0At Danvers, the Eagles (0-1) had a boatload of chances in the early going but failed to convert, allowing the visitors to score twice in the final nine minutes to steal away the two points.”We fell into their style of game,” Prep coach Dave Crowell said. “We allowed them to basically dump and chase all day.”
