English, Classical seek their first victory of 2010

September 16, 2010 by Matthew Roy

Two teams coming off tough losses will meet at Miller Field on Friday (7) as Winthrop plays host to Lynn English in an inter-divisional battle in the Northeastern Conference.”This is going to be a tough game,” Winthrop coach Sean Driscoll said. “English is fast and very athletic. They are a fast break type of offense and want to score in a hurry on you.”English had nearly twice as many first downs and almost 100 more yards of total offense than the Lancers on Friday but surrendered a touchdown in the final minute to fall behind. A last ditch march to the two ended on an incompletion on the game’s final play.”We are concerned about their athletes on ours,” Driscoll said. “English is as fast a team as there is in the conference.”The Vikings, meanwhile, will also be looking to get going after their offense sputtered for nearly three quarters against Salem. Despite not having a first down until late in the third, Winthrop still had a shot to tie or go ahead but turned the ball over inside the Salem 10.”Defensively, I was happy with how we played. But I thought we’d perform a little better on offense,” Driscoll said.Wakefield at ClassicalAt Manning Field on Friday (7), fresh off facing Catholic Conference power Catholic Memorial in its season opener, the Classical football team jumps right back into the fire at Manning Field on Friday when it hosts Wakefield. The Rams upended Wakefield a year ago on the Warriors’ home turf as a part of the Middlesex League power’s 1-5 start that ended in a 6-5 season after a five game win streak.Classical comes in after coming frustratingly close to knocking off the Knights. The Rams led at several points but saw CM quarterback A.J. Doyle throw a touchdown pass in the final moments for a 21-14 win.The Warriors, ranked in the top 15 of many area polls entering the season, will begin their season on Friday and boast a load of talented players.Brandon Johnson and Anthony Fabiano lead a strong front line on offense and defense while Josh Puccio and Ervin St. Jean lead the running game. Connor O’Brien will quarterback Wakefield after missing most of last year following knee surgery. The two teams played a year ago at Landrigan Field in Wakefield with the Rams coming away victorious.
