Golf: Peabody outduels Swampscott

The Peabody golf team outduelled Swampscott 34-38, Tuesday at Swampscott.Swampscott coach Linda Portnoy was very impressed with the play of everyone.”It was a very good and well played match. There was a lot of low scores; unfortunately my team came up just short,” Portnoy said.The key for the Tanners was taking the first two matches and never looking back. Ethan Goulas won at number one (5-4). Kyle Franey shot a match low 35 in his win at number two. Matt McIsaac won at number seven (6 1/2-2 1/2). The Swampscott winners were: Trevor Massey, at number three (5-4); Gino Cresta, at number four (6-3); Kevin Marescalchi, at number six (5-4) and Mat Videtta, at number eight (5-4). Swampscott (2-1) plays English Tuesday.St. John’s 154, St. Mary’s 184At Kernwood, the St. John’s trio of Nick McLaughlin, Tom Adie, and Jake Danforth led the way in this rain-shortened match. McLaughlin, Adie, and Danforth all shot a match low 38. Nick Pandela chipped in with a score of 40. The Spartans had strong performances from Cam O’Neil (43), Dave Deschenes (44), Nick Amenta (48), and Ryan Madden (49). St. Mary’s (4-2) plays Arlington Catholic Monday.Beverly 36 1/2, Saugus 35 1/2At Cedar Glen, the Sachems played a very good match despite the result. The lone winner for Saugus was Cameron Norton at number two (6-3). Saugus (1-4) plays Marblehead Tuesday.Salem 36 1/2, Marblehead 35 1/2At Olde Salem Greens, it was a very tight match throughout; the number three and six spots would be the difference in the match for Salem. At number three, Salem’s Kyle Gauthier won a close match (5 1/2-3 1/2). At number six, Matt Covitz won his match (6 1/2-2 1/2). Salem (3-1) plays Winthrop Monday.Wilmington 150, Lynnfield 116At Sagamore, the young Pioneers had a strong team effort despite the result. Lynnfield’s Matt Boehner led the way with 27 points. Chris Lang chipped in with 20 points. Alex Rugato had a strong match with 19 points. Lynnfield is now 0-3.Winthrop 59 1/2, Revere 12 1/2At Winthrop, the Vikings had a strong team performance across the board from Jake Grant, at number one (36); Pat Grogan, at number two (38); Tyler Peette, at number three (41); Mario Pasco, at number four (42); Adam Lundberg, number five (41) and Matt Todisco, at number six (42). Winthrop (2-2) plays Salem Monday.Danvers 55 1/2, Classical 16 1/2At Gannon Golf Course, Classical had a strong team effort despite the result. Lee Nelson played a strong match at number four. Eric Brazell played very well at number two. Classical is now 0-3.Gloucester 52, English 11At Bass Rocks, English’s Joe Lannon, at number one, shot a team low 39. Lannon ended up losing the match (3-6). Lannon’s opponent shot a match low 36. Jared Fossa lost a close match as well (3 1/2-5 1/2). English is now 0-2.
