NAHANT – Hitting the gas on the Nahant Causeway is getting some motorists citations in excess of $1,000.According to Police Lt. Thomas Hutton, one motorist was recently issued a citation for $1,220.?He was doing 90 miles an hour on the inbound lane of the Causeway at 6 a.m.,” Hutton said. “The speed limit is 25 miles per hour and it is being strictly enforced.”The speed limit was cut down to 25 mph, from 45 mph, during the recent work in the area.Hutton said within the last two weeks numerous written citations, written warnings and verbal warnings have been issued to motorists speeding across the Causeway.?One morning the State Police with the assistance of Nahant Police issued 15 tickets in an hour,” he said. “All the cars ticketed were inbound vehicles traveling at more than 40 miles per hour.”Hutton said between May 1 and Sept. 17 of this year, the Nahant Police Department made 65 arrests for motor vehicle infractions. It also issued 124 civil citations, 70 criminal citations and 70 written warnings.?We are on a campaign to get people to slow down,” he said. “We have issued countless verbal warnings. “The crackdown on speeding motorists got underway this spring when the $20 million Nahant Causeway rehabilitation project, which is expected to take three years to complete, got underway.
