SAUGUS – Like the phoenix rising from the ashes, the Saugus girls soccer team is all the way back after a 6-1 victory over Winthrop on Wednesday. Kaleigh Evans provided the offensive spark with four goals.Click here for a photo gallery. The 2010 edition of the Sachems plays in a manner reminiscent of the strong teams of the late coach Ted Moriello. Most of the credit goes to current coach Chris Coviello. He has molded them into an aggressive, take-no-prisoners type of team. They attack the other team all over the field. All good teams start with the keeper and work their way out. Saugus junior Melissa Toomey has every move that a keeper needs, with outstanding speed. Any keeper is only as good as the defenders in front of her. Toomey has that. Sweeper Stephanie Terrazzano is lightning quick and has a left foot that can drive the ball 50 yards downfield.Saugus came into the game with a 4-1 record, losing only to Salem in a non-league game.Winthrop came to the Anna Parker soccer complex with coach Tracey Martucci, who brought the Vikings to the game with a 2-2 record. They had already lost to Saugus, 2-0, in the Winthrop preseason classic.Saugus opened the scoring in the ninth minute. Gabby Cogliano carried the ball deep into the right corner and crossed it to Evans standing near the penalty shot spot. She settled the ball and put it into the low right corner past Viking keeper Johnna Fisher. This made the score 1-0, Saugus. In the 23rd minute, Saugus struck again. Olivia Turgeon crossed the ball from the right wing into the box. Emily Quinlan picked up the pass and buried the shot into the top right corner. In the 39th minute, just seconds before halftime, Breana Evans went on a solo dash through three Winthrop defenders. She went from right to left through the area and put the ball behind the moving keeper. This made the score Saugus 3, Winthrop 0.Ten minutes into the second half, Evans picked up her second goal of the game. She picked off a clearing pass, broke between two defenders and with one of the defenders tugging at her shirt, she managed to put the ball into the far corner for a 4-0 Saugus lead.Coviello, who substituted liberally, now started putting in multiple subs. The next seventeen minutes were played at midfield. In the 67th minute, Winthrop got on the board. Striker Jessica Dawson was left alone in front of the net. She got a rebound from a scramble in front and put the shot under the diving Saugus keeper.Coviello inserted his starters and two minutes later Evans picked up the hat trick. She dribbled through three defenders from just outside the top right corner of the area. At about the penalty spot, she blasted the ball into the far low corner to run the score to 5-1 Saugus. In the 72nd minute Evans picked up her fourth goal of the game on a through ball that she one-timed from just inside the arc for the 6-1 final. After the game, a disappointed Martucci said, “We have had some injuries and some players were not 100 percent. They still outplayed us. They are taller and faster and that means a lot in soccer.”Winthrop’s record now falls to 2-3.Coviello, whose record now moves to 5-1, was happy with his team.”We have a great keeper as well as a rock solid defense. They can run and hit better than most teams. Kaleigh’s four goals were remarkable,” Coviello said.Coviells said his 10 seniors and have blended well with the younger kids and they’re all starting to jell.”We’re looking forward to the iron of the league, Peabody and Danvers,” Coviello said.
