SWAMPSCOTT – The town is participating in National Family Health and Fitness Day at Swampscott High School this Sunday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.Recreation Director Danielle Strauss said the free family friendly event is being sponsored by the Swampscott Recreation Department, Swampscott Health Department and Swampscott Public School nurses.Strauss said certified local instructors would offer free 30-minute fitness classes for kids and adults in yoga, kick boxing, dance, spinning and gymnastics. Other demonstrations and classes include batting practice and a rope course.”There will be free classes every 30 minutes,” she said. “Swampscott/Nahant Youth Lacrosse will be doing a demonstration at 10:30 a.m. There will be several events running concurrently through the day.”Detective Rose Cheever, who is the school resource officer for the Swampscott Police Department, and Officer Candace Doyle will be teaching a Resist Aggression Defensively (RAD) class for women.Strauss said there would be more than 35 businesses and organizations represented at the family fitness event including Bally Total Fitness, Paradise Gym, Peak Performance, Burke’s Tumbling Academy, Dancer’s Dream, Green Tea Yoga, Hit Zone, Paradise Gym, YMCA and Whole Foods Market.”Whole Foods will be giving out free samples,” she said. “There will be chair massages, health screenings and a lot of free giveaways.”Strauss added the free health screenings include blood pressure checks and sun damage facial scans.
