LYNN – The early start on Friday didn’t seem to faze Lynn English quarterback Tyllor McDonald and the rest of his Bulldog teammates against Beverly.Playing in a rare 5 p.m. kickoff, the Bulldogs spotted the Panthers a 7-0 lead early before English’s senior quarterback took over. McDonald rushed for 111 yards and two scores while throwing for 141 yards and two more touchdowns as English rattled off 33 unanswered points to take a 33-7 win at Manning Field.Beverly7English33 “I’ve said it all year, as goes Tyllor, so goes our team,” English coach Peter Holey said. “The only thing I didn’t like was that we gave up a score early. But I like how we responded right away to them.”English (2-1) got down 7-0 late in the first quarter on a touchdown pass from Joe Wioncek to Mark Giles before charging right back down the field. McDonald hit Travonne Berry-Rogers for a 13-yard strike on a fade route to tie the game at 7-7 after one quarter. From there on, it would be all Bulldogs.A 43-yard completion to Berry-Rogers on third-and-18 at the English 10 got the Bulldogs out of trouble and sent their offense on a scoring spree. McDonald paid off the drive with 3:58 left in the half when he went in from the seven and added a 2-point conversion on a botched snap to make it 15-7.The Panthers (0-3) saw things go from bad to worse moments later as punter Dave Rollins dropped a snap and was tackled for a 22-yard loss with 1:43 left.”Those are things you can’t afford to have happen,” Beverly coach Dan Bauer said.English turned the botched punt into a 28-yard Cory Burt field goal and went to the half with an 18-7 lead and complete control of the game.”I’m glad we were able to kick the field goal there because there are going to be games down the line when we need something like that,” Holey said.McDonald picked up right where he left off at the start of the third quarter, this time shredding the defense with a little help from Melvin Tavares. The duo ate up all of the yardage on a 62-yard march that McDonald capped with a two-yard sneak to make it 25-7.Beverly was forced to punt on its next possession and English took over with 5:26 left at the Panther 29. The Bulldogs needed only one play to cap their 33-point barrage as McDonald scrambled around in the pocket before throwing to a wide-open Erik Holey in the end zone.”We are starting to click on offense,” Holey said. “I was happy to see Tyllor get Erik involved a little bit. He’s a 6-6 wideout that is very capable of catching the ball.”
