LEXINGTON ? After surviving a pair of turnovers and an all-around shaky first quarter, the Lynn Tech football team came together and virtually dominated the remaining three quarters to defeat Minuteman, 25-6, Saturday.Tech25Minuteman6 “(Minuteman) really gave it to us in the first quarter,” Tech coach James Runner said. “But we noticed a few things and made some adjustments on the fly and some great adjustments at halftime. That is what it is all about, making adjustments to your game plan and executing.”Through the first two games the defense has came to play for the Tigers (2-0). In both games, Tech has held its opponent to under 100 yards of total offense, while only allowing six points through the first eight quarters of the season.”I really think we played unbelievably defensively,” said Runner. “Minuteman has a very strong tailback (Anthony Altamirano) and we did a nice job sealing off the edge and keeping (him) at bay. Pedro (Martinez) in particular did a nice job out there ? on both sides of the ball, for that matter.”Martinez, who was awarded the game ball after the game by Runner, finished with 12 tackles playing the strong-side outside linebacker ? three of which were behind the line of scrimmage. As a team the Tigers held Altamirano to only 3.8 yards per carry (49 yards on 13 carries).Tech had a particularly efficient second quarter offensively. The team only ran five plays, but scored a pair of touchdowns through the air. Sophomore quarterback Kennedy Gomes’ exciting entrance into the varsity ranks continued with a 76-yard hookup with Cliff Robinson and a 35-yarder to Richie Warren (the third time the two have hooked up for a touchdown this season).”Gomes did a nice job leading this offense,” said Runner. “We’ve counted on him and he is only a sophomore. He has done a great job scrambling with the ball too.”Gomes actually led the team in rushing against the Mustangs (1-2), picking up 46 yards on the ground, including a game-capping 25-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He also went 7-for-15 through the air for 185 yards with the two touchdowns and one interception. Through two games he has an impressive four touchdown passes and two touchdown runs.Martinez was not given a carry in the entire first half, but exploded for 45 yards on four carries in the second half. He capped off a time-killing eight play drive in the third quarter, by barreling through the middle of the field on third and goal from the five on a well-executed draw play.”We couldn’t really give Pedro the ball in the first half,” said Runner, “because they were keeping seven men in the box pretty consistently. We needed to spread them out a little and then got him some touches.”Martinez also finished with three receptions for 28 yards.
