LYNN – As school enrollment finally begins to settle down, school administrators are gaining a clearer picture of the total number of students in Lynn schools and which classrooms are crowded and which have seats to spare.Preliminary numbers from earlier in the month suggested the district had seen a drop in enrollment, but Superintendent Catherine Latham said this week that totals had shifted and Lynn actually gained about 200 more students this year compared to last year.Administrators have also started to shift some students from crowded kindergarten and elementary classes to other classes and schools where class sizes are lower. Latham will present an update on enrollment at Thursday’s School Committee meeting at the Lynn Public Schools Administrative Office at 90 Commercial St. The meeting starts at 7 p.m.Also on the agenda are presentations by School Committee attorney John Mihos, who will discuss the open meeting law, and Marilyn Mahoney, who will explain Lynn’s kindergarten program. The committee will also review field trip plans for students from Aborn, Lincoln-Thomas and Sisson elementary schools to visit Nature’s Classroom in Freedom, N.H. Also on the agenda is a request from the Lynn Teacher’s Union to approve a paid, three-day leave for Alison Hrubes, Aili Knight and Philip McQueen to attend the American Federation of Teachers National Conference on Collaborative School Reform in Washington, D.C. Oct. 6-8.
