MARBLEHEAD ? Last week, Revere’s Trae Weathers ran roughshod over Swampscott. The Marblehead High football team was determined to not let that happen to it.Revere20Marblehead21 Weathers, who racked up 219 yards in the first half last Saturday, scored all three of Revere’s touchdowns, but was held to a season-low 78 yards rushing, as the Magicians (2-3) edged the Patriots, 21-20, Friday night, at Marblehead High.Marblehead’s Will Quigley ran for a game-high 107 yards and scored a touchdown, while Ryan Stanojev added what proved to be the game-winning touchdown on a 17-yard run.Dan Colbert, alternating at quarterback with Stanojev, also threw a 34-yard scoring pass to Colton Dana.Click here for a photo gallery of Friday night’s gameWeathers broke off a 93-yard kickoff return for one score, returned an interception 23-yard for another touchdown, and scored on a 1-yard plunge, but his longest gain from scrimmage was 18 yards as the Magicians contained the big back ? well, as much as any team can contain him.”He’s a great player, but but our kids on defense just played out of their minds tonight,” Marblehead coach Jim Rudloff said. “This is the first time we’ve had all the kids we expected to be on the field on the field for us. He (Weathers) burned us with that kickoff return, but otherwise our kids just played great.”The loss was another heartbreaker for the Patriots (3-2), who won their first three games but have lost the last two by one point.”I’m probably more guilty of this than they (players) are, but we’ve got to let these close losses go,” Revere coach Lou Cicatelli said. “Give them credit. They’re a good football team. The difference was they made their PATs and we didn’t.”While the Magicians have perhaps the best place kicker in the conference in Oliver Kim, who nailed all three of his extra points, Revere opted to go for two points after each of its touchdowns, and converted only once.”We’ve probably got to work on that, but in my mind giving the ball to (Weathers) and hoping he can get a couple yards is a pretty good option,” Ciciatelli said.A defensively-oriented first half ended with the Magicians ahead, 7-6. On Marblehead’s first offensive series, Weathers perfectly read a receiver screen, stepped in front of the pass and reutrned it for a touchdown with 6:13 left in the first quarter. The Magicians answered on their third possession, moving the ball 81 yards with Quigley carrying the ball seven of 10 plays. He went around left end from 11 yards out for a touchdown that with Kim’s extra point gave Marblehead its first lead with 6:11 remaining in the first half. All the rest of the scoring took place in a wild third quarter. On Revere’s first possession of the second half, Drew Lauria ran 36 yards around right end to set up Weathers’ short scoring run two plays later. Nick Perry intercepted Lauria’s pass on the conversion and Revere led, 12-7, with 6:54 left in the third quarter.Marblehead came right back with a quick 5-play drive that covered 75 yards and was helped by a personal foul on Revere. On the next play after the penalty, Colbert foundDana with a pass along the left sideline, at about the 10-yard line. Dana muscled his way into the end zone and Kim’s kick gave the Magicians a 14-12 lead with 4:32 left in the third quarter.Weathers bobbled the ensuing kickoff, but collected it and raced down the right sideline, hopping over a pile of players at about his own 40. He won the footrace after that, and Jose Amaya’s run for two points gave a 20-14 lead right back to the Patriots.Stanojev took Revere’s kickoff 58 yards to give the Magicians field position at the Patriots’ 33, and six plays later the speedy Stanojev scored on a keeper around right end.The key play was a 10-yard pass from Colbert to Matt Perlow on third-and-11, which set up a 4-yard run by Colbert for a first down.Revere’s deepest penetration the rest of the game was Marblehead’s 43, but the drive stalled with about seven minutes left.
