Georgetown frustrates Bishop Fenwick

PEABODY – The setup seemed to favor Bishop Fenwick. Riding the momentum of back-to-back wins, the Crusaders were playing a bonus home game after Friday’s storm left Georgetown’s field unplayable. The Royals seemed the perfect stepping stone for Fenwick (2-4) to climb to .500 with a third consecutive win against a Cape Ann Small foe. Instead, Georgetown (1-4) snapped an eight-game losing streak spanning two seasons and more than doubled its offensive output in a 25-14 win at blustery Donaldson Field Saturday. Junior quarterback Tyler Wade ran for one score, passed for another, and sealed the win with field goals of 40 and 39 yards on consecutive fourth-quarter possessions.Georgetown25Fenwick14 “Give them all the credit – Georgetown outplayed us, out-coached us and deserved the win. We got behind early and they kept us down. Their defensive line totally dominated us – we couldn’t get anything going,” said Fenwick coach Dave Woods. The numbers back that up – the Crusaders rushed for minus-15 yards and quarterback Bret Kidik (16-35, 220 yards, two TDs) was bothered by the wind and the Royals from the get-go, resulting in four sacks and two interceptions.”The wind was a bit of a factor but mostly it was their defensive line. Bret was on the run all day – our offensive line did not have a very good day,” said Woods.”Everything changed after the (31-8) loss to Amesbury last week,” Georgetown coach Matt Bouchard said. “It was evident on Monday. Our leadership stepped in and we had the best week of practice we’ve had to date. We were prepared to play against a good football club and Tyler showed how dynamic a player he can be.”Though sacked three times, Wade completed seven of 15 passes for 196 yards and added 51 yards on the ground. Senior Derek DePasquale, who struggled against Amesbury, rebounded with two TDs and 170 yards from scrimmage on just nine touches.”I just kept working hard in practice – and we had the best week of practice we’ve had in my four years here,” DePasquale said. The Royals got on the board 59 seconds into the second quarter on Wade’s eight-yard run. He carried five straight times, including a 22-yard scamper to the Fenwick 17 on the first play of the quarter.Georgetown doubled the lead late in the half. The diminutive DePasquale ran through three would-be tacklers and raced 46 yards to the Fenwick eight, then finished the drive with a three-yard scoring run three plays later. The conversion rush failed but the Royals carried a 12-0 lead into the break. The Royals gained control on their first possession of the second half. On third and 10 at his own 10, DePasquale gathered in Wade’s bubble screen to the left, found a seam created by a pair of well-executed blocks and pulled away from the pursuit for a 90-yard score. Wade’s PAT made it 19-0 with 7:16 to play in the third.Fenwick matched that on an identical play little more than a minute later with Kidik and Ryan Lipka hooking up for a 58-yard strike. Wade, though, thwarted any chance of a comeback with his field goals on the first play of the fourth quarter (40 yards) and with 5:47 to play (39 yards). The Crusaders closed to 25-14 on Kidik’s 29-yard scoring pass to Billy Klemczuk and two-point conversion rush with 4:07 left but the Royals’ Mike Bjork put an exclamation point on the victory with his second sack of Kidik with less than two minutes to go.
